Avoid the leather

I had a leather hat almost identical to that one years ago. Way too heavy to actually wear, it had a stiff fabric sweatband that was very itchy, so it was always uncomfortable. It was hot in the summer, cold in the winter. They just don't work well as hats, stick to felt or straw, and use the leather for the sweatband.

Yes, my thoughts exactly.
I owned one leather hat once which I bought in a leather goods shop in Old Town, San Diego. Great style, but heavy and hot!
What I don't understand is, if you appreciate the fedora as a hat, why not put the money toward a quality fur felt?

I can see it being practical if one was to be spending all day out in the sort of driving rain that will eventually soak through even the best of fur felt. A bit too in danger of looking like some wannabe rock star from the 80s for my liking, though. lol I think for that sort of circumstance, I'd probably prefer something similar in wax cotton. Certainly wouldn't fancy a western in leather, but then those aren't really to my taste in any material. YMMV...

Here is the hat....I will not be seen in public with it. It is the worst purchase I have ever made. I, however, wanted to post it to save you from your prospective poor choice.

lol lol lol Have you considered "shopping" at some of our local banks lately; you look strangely like a teller camera shot I saw recently, with that Texas stick-up mask and really bad hat.....:D

in defense...

I did not have that hat per say, but a leather Henschel fedora that had a center dent crown and 2.5" brim.

The hat was heavy and warm, but comfortable. it worked out well for my snow shoeing / hiking adventures when I was younger.

it looked very similar to this one, but in a smooth finished leather.

Leather hats have their place, and it's not always in the bottom of a septic tank.

lol - I agree!

{By the way, great photo of a floppy hat, CB!}

OK, here are the ones I've owned over the years.:eek: I still have a couple of them. I guess I'm sentimentally attached. They don't get much, if any, play since I upgraded to fur felt hats a couple years ago or so.

I've always found it wierd that all the Aussie tourist shops in the city sell stacks of the kangaroos leather hats alongside all the koala T-shirts and didgeridoos.

They're always called the "Aussie Bushman" or something like that but I don't know that many Aussies that wear them.

I think "German Backpacker" would be a better name;)
