"It isn't a @*$%> cowboy hat"

:eek:fftopic:purdue let Ball State score 28 points last Saturday (38-28) ... and could only beat Miami (OH) in overtime two weeks ago, having let them score 31 points. Indiana State scored 35 points on purdue three weeks ago. Things do not bode well for the season ...:eek:fftopic:

Back to the cowboy hats ...

I usually get "top hat" comments.

That's what mystifies me. Look under "Top Hats" on eBay and you get all kinds of ball caps, trucker caps, even military hats.

If I had the time and energy, I'd send messages to those sellers explaining what a "Top Hat" is, but they probably don't speak English.

searching

is an art, not a science.

If you search OFAS for:

top hat = 1994 hits
"top hat" = 1311 hits
"top hat" 7 1/2 = 3 hits

Ah, I've no beef with cowboy hats. They're not my particular style, but at least they are hats!

Some people look good in them, however I am not one of them.

When I was but a wee lad I had a white cowboy hat, I uesta pretend that I was the Lone Ranger. :p

There ain't nothin' wrong with cowboy hats ;)

Quite true, I rather like the look of a cowboy hat ala Tom Mix!

However, when wearing a fedora and trying to look like a well dressed gentleman of a specific time period, it's unnerving to be called a cowboy when you're portraying a "City Slicker" the 30's or 40's. ;)

People call this cowboy hat an Indiana Jones hat and have done so on more than one occassion. You just can't win.

I like that hat!! I think any brown hat automatically gets classified an Indy fedora. But, you know, way back when I first saw Raiders, I knew right away his hat was not a western hat, although to me, certain hats he wore in the first film has a western flavor to it. I think that is why I initially went crazy over his fedora. It looked different than my idea of a classic dress fedora, but also different than the classic western hat. But when you consider that I was a lad in the 50's, men were still wearing a few hats in my area. All of those dress hats had the narrow brims and low crowns, and this was part of the reason the Raiders fedora did not look like a typical dress fedora. My idea of a dress hat looked like the one Jack Ruby wore as he blew Oswalt away, and it certainly looked nothing like the Raiders fedora.

Yeah, it is like wearing an Indy fedora, and having someone comment they like the Croc hat!! In times like these, just put on your best Australian accent and give a favorite line from that film. Might as well return humor with humor. ;) Fedora

I just looked at that pic again, and honestly, if you took a bit off of the brim it would be very close to the LC Indy fedora. The Indy hat has a bit of that western look going on-brimwise, at least to me. Fedora

Thanks for the comments on the hat. It's an Akubra Bobby that I reshaped to my liking. I think the brim is 3.25 or 3.5". I certainly never see any of the local cowboys wearing one like it.

I'm actually going to wear a cowboy hat for a change.
We're going to the cowtown rodeo tomorrow. Out come the resistol open road look alike (san antonio) and cowboy boots.

I just love the name of this thread. I have been called Indiana Jones by an adult more than once. I DO get called a cowboy by children. I don't have a Jones replica or a western style hat.

Yes, they really are cowboy hats. That's why they can be purchased pretty much anywhere that sells cowboy stuff. Sheplers comes to mind. you can find it there under their Cowboy Hats section. http://www.sheplers.com/hats/cowboy/

Yes, it's a more formal style associated with Politicians like LBJ and Boss Hogg, than a work hat associated with rodeo cowboys and country music singers, but it's still one of the quintessential cowboy styles. If you care if people think you're wearing a cowboy hat, you might want to choose a different hat.

Well, I have two open road hats, one with the slip of a hat band but with a true fedora crease, and the other I replaced the old worn tattered thin hat band with some 1 1/2 grosgrain with some nice bow work. Among all the hats I wear, I have not once had anyone make the "cowboy: comment, but if they did, I guess I would smile and say, "Bank robber, yes....cowboy, no"! (just to be a smarty pants)! lol!

I do own an old Bailey cowboy hat...and yes, I wear it now and again!

Unless some one deleted their post I have no Idea who you are talking to Matt

Jeff

I was responding to the OP. Sorry I did it before I noticed the thread was 6 pages long. Saying an Open Road is not a cowboy hat is just silly. of course it is. Doesn't matter how you crease it, it's a cowboy hat. Plenty of cowboy hats have had teardrop creases. I think they look great creased that way, but it doesn't make them NOT a cowboy hat.
