Wow KD...thats it!! It seems to have a thick brim but can't tell if it's double or not!! hmmm Devil Bwana eh? Think the word " Devil" might discourage sales?

Art -- Yeah, it does have a thick brim, I think it is a longer brim than Granger's and the hat band looks to be multi-colored or something.

I will see if I can find other photos from Bwana Devil, which, I said earlier was an earlier film on the Ghost and the Darkness story of those killer lions.

I think the title Bwana Devil might certainly attract some folks and scare a few others. Plus, there's the movie title copyright.

Art, here are a couple of others from the movie, one of Stack, one of him and another actor with a white jungle hat.

and

Unfortunately, the second photo was too small to make out details, but at least it is a side view of Stack's hat. The first image shows the thick brim but is not a good shot of the overall hat, as the first image was.

That hat definitely looks like the 'gurkha' or British Army slouch style, with the thick or double brim.
Sometimes the double brims are sewn together at the extreme brim-edge, so it looks like a single, thick brim- I've been looking at more and more of these- may have to get one.

Gosh awful movie too, all shot on Hollywood backlot (or appeared to be)! Co-starred Nigel Bruce (also in second photo above) who played Watson to Rathbone's Sherlock Holmes. He played the character in THIS film the same way. Title escapes me at the moment  Regards. Michaelson

Yes, I never saw it, but it got bad reviews and is remembered today only because it was the first of those 3-D films to come out of Hollywood in the early 50's. The ad they used was "A Lion in Your Lap."

Certainly The Ghost and the Darkness was a much better film. That one I liked.

Did Nigel Bruce play the same role in Bwana Devil as Michael Douglas did in "Ghost and the Darkness?"

In the Mail

I mailed off a 100% natural beaver to Art. I don't want a double brim but i I want the color, block, pug etc. If Art can find the right color of the Pug should be one nice Safari hat.

I just read that in the old days to keep the hats cooler they lined them in the color Scarlet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :) It keeps the hat wearer cooler.

RED

Sharp, I've read about red hat linings before- the German Afrika Korps had red lining in their caps and also the Victorian English in India and Africa had red linings in their Pith helmets and get this 'spine protectors', a cloth cover for your back-
This thing about red was not based in science and is claptrap- they thought one could protect ones self from not only the burning heat on the skin but 'internal' heat damage- they thought the spine was detrimentally affected by the sun.
The spine protector caused more cases of heat stroke than any other factor-
So- there's no truth in it really-

-why not green?

Pith helmets used to be aluminium lined though, for coolness-
