Hi I am wondering if anyone of the Fedora lounge has experience in importing boots or anything else over 800$ form Japan to the United States? Can I pay the tax online or do I have to go to rhe customs office the seller is using DHL

In the past I have been sent a message from whatever carrier used and have had to pay them. It was DHL in my case. Not sure if all carriers are the same.

Isn’t there a free trade agreement between US and Japan and the products originating from Japan are tax exempt? Or am I wrong here?

DHL express will let you pay online, but will charge for the service.

If the information (documentation) the seller provides is insufficient, DHL might ask you to fill out a customs form, so be weary of that. Then they will also require you to provide proof of purchase like a receipt, so if the seller declared a lower value the full amount will be taxed anyway in that case. I know because I just had to pay import duties yesterday on an incoming jacket and that exact thing happened to me.
