I guess there's some good in being 'eccentric'

My Dad used to give me alot of ribbing about the hats and the old wool suits and coats and the socks and the ties and old t shirts etc. etc.

One time we were moving out of an apartment and my Dad kept rushing up to move my stuff from the closet,,,noone else could do it except him it seemed , I thought what the hell, at least he's helping out..

He kept making a big deal out of it.... all the stuff I had.

He was taking a particularly long time at one point so I went in the room and snagged him trying on an a 30's jacket and vest while a fedora hung off the side of his head,,in front of the mirror no less..

what a laugh I had as he just kind of smiled.....

He's gone now so that memory just makes life worthwhile...

My parent's both love it. I'm sure it's partly the idea that I'm interested in the time period they were children in, and partly because it sure beats all the garbage I used to be into, lol...

haha yeah, i think before i got into vintage dancing and clothing, my dad was convinced i was going to die getting my head stepped on in a mosh pit or something. he still thinks it's weird though.

But yes, I have a large bag in my storeroom full of sewing notions and similar things that friends of my mother have passed on to me -- "Hardly anybody sews these days, but I'm sure you can give these things a good home..."

My dad likes the clothes, but he thinks I'm weird no matter what I do.

He recently came over and I was in a corset (I have to be) and I had a cover on. I was decent (you got to understand that, I had less skin showing then my sister usually does) and he thinks I'm going to go run off and be on drugs. I wore a 20's dress to visit him and my brother and my dad thought I was stramge (even if I got told "pretty dress, if you were my grandmother"). But I do have to say, my dad will pick me up some antique sewing attachment or odd and end, and he has been known to buy something utterly frilly for me (my dad is the "you might be a redneck..." poster boy).

Lizzie, LD...I got plenty of room to help with that bag.

Every time I bring my daughter over to my future mother in law's house she has something that made her "think of me" or "would suit me". She's an enabler because she's obsessed with antique shopping and along the way buys clothes that are too small for her because they're cute. While her husband keeps coming up with antique sewing machines and typewriters that he tries to pawn off on me just to clear out the basement.

I guess I'm the only one they can try to unload stuff on because of my love of "old" things. But I won't complain

My mom thinks I'm totally insane, but she still lets everyone know to hang onto any vintage they're going to get rid of and let me poke through it first. The funny thing is, in the 1980's she would dress in 40's and 50's vintage, yet she still thinks I'm crazy!

Well, I used to be "pigeon toed" in the sense that my toes pointed inward when I walked for a long, long time (curse of the flat feet!). Now I just like pigeons!

People don't give me ties or clothes but they give me antique furniture. I don't know why. I think they know I'll appreciate it. And I do. We have gotten much of our good furniture this way. A friend was moving to Malta (!) and gave me a hundred year old armoire from Missouri, beautiful, with a drawer that has holes that fit liquor bottles. She also gave me an antique secretary that someone had painted white (yes, needless to say I am looking to Jasco the paint off). Our landlords gave us an elaborately carved dining room table, trestle style. It has stains and could use bleaching and varnishing but it's a magnificent piece of furniture. We also got another armoire and an antique mirror. All of the stuff is dark wood, so it all looks pretty nice together. This happens a lot and I am not sure why but I won't look a gift horse in the mouth to count his teeth. With the exception of a crib, one of our rooms is almost entirely antique. When we buy a house I want to get a Victorian and do one room completely period. The disadvantage to getting all this stuff free is that I am reluctant to pay real prices for anything, even on ebay, because I'm always thinking free stuff will come along. I hope my luck doesn't run out.
