How to travel with hats

That Stetson 100 case is just what I was talking about (I've bid on several, but always get outbid). I have a case now, so I don't really look for 'em anymore. But those Stetson 100 cases are nice.

Imahomer, believe it or not, I don't care too much if my vintage stuff gets banged up. It was made to be used - and stuff looks cooler beat-up, anyway, I think. But I can understand your hesitance, although most of those vintage hat cases are already pretty banged up, anyway. I don't really care who sees it or anything like that...I just like to surround myself with old stuff. I'm not really sure why. it's some kind of weird "vibes" thing.

Oh, I really understand. I'm the same way. I just can't bear to have my oldies beat up, or worse. My fear with this hat box is a month overseas lugging it around would beat the heck out of it. If I was going away for the weekend, then that would be a different story.

Speaking of travelling with hats, I'm going to be in Washington, D.C. on the 14th for a week of research, and thought I would take my new PanamaBob/Art Fawcett Montecristi as my only hat, since I don't have a hat box and my wife won't wear a second hat for me. I've been watching the weather back there, and looks like I could be in for the occasional thunderstorm. Will D.C. weather be all right for my Montecristi, or will the rain decimate a block?

Actually, I'll be at the National Archives in College Park, but I'm planning on being able to finish up in about four days (I hope) and then have a couple of days to sightsee with my wife. Was there something you needed researched? I couldn't guarantee I'll have the time, but just in case...

How do you all handle air travel with your hat? Do you put it on the floor by your feet or put it in your lap or do you just wear it? The overhead bins can be dicey since they are usually crammed full of luggage.

Flying with a hat is a touch troublesome. I keep mine in my lap, but then when it's time for the tray table to come down, there's no good place for it except to wear it, which is it's own bit of awkwardness given how close your head is to the back of the seat. I don't have a hat can, but usually have a carry on and so-called "personal item" with me anyway, so I'd probably have to check the can. I'm not sure that's less trouble than moving the hat from lap to head in the cabin. My two cents.

When traveling, I usually wear a hat with a 3 1/8" brim. I keep it on my knee in the plane. I can't wear it in the seat and would never put it out of my sight in the overhead bin. While eating, I actually cradle it with my shoes.
Some planes have enough room to put it under the seat. Some see it as a hassle but I would feel naked without it.

I always travel with a large hatbox as my 'personal' carryon, as well as a small rolling case. I've yet to have a problem with any airline when storing them in the overhead bins.

Get a hat can. It makes it all easy.
What is a hat can?
Thanks.

Personally, I wear mine or stow it in the overhead. If it gets a little crushed, I just pop it out. I usually wear a more adventurous hat rather than a dress hat when I fly.

This is one of the problems of modern hat wearing; there's no infrastructure set up for it!

I travel with a backpack carryon and I put it on top of that in the upper compartment. I"ve never had a problem, but with a good fur felt hat, even if it gets bent out of shape, it's easy to get back into shape. A Panama can be a little harder, but I've never had much of a problem. I don't put it on my lap. Too much hassle, especially with a long flight...KC

I have not had a problem storing it in the overhead. It takes a bit of caution (hint: watch your fellow passengers) and do not wear a priceless hat when travelling.

Take a look at the website of the Greeley Hatworks. Their website is being rebuilt, but they have a photo of their hat safe/carrier in the top right corner of the window. They're a hard plastic/fiber material, and they come in various colors. They're less than $100, but I don't remember the actual number. They have an expandable center mount for the hat so you can set it in place and it's held away from the sides.:cheers1:

I've had great success with an old Paul Stuart Fortnighter. It's soft enough to smooch into the overhead, but well made enough to reshape easily.

I've also traveled with my Optimos. It's a little bit dicier, but people seem to respect it. I just put it on top of my folded topcoat in the overhead. A tip: put your coat and hat at the aft end of the bin. Then, when the plane decelerates on landing, and luggage shifts forward, they won't get crushed.
