Here's one that followed me home today. It might be a catch-and-release. Right now, I kinda like it for its simplicity.

Nice brown supple steerhide. The collar lapels lead me to think it's from the 1970s. Elasticized sides and a single chest pocket with a small pencil pocket.

Lined in wool, no interior pockets:

Snap cuffs with intact elastic storm cuffs within:

I haven't seen this type of Talon zipper pull before. LF is marked on both sides, and the pull is on the left-hand side.

A single patch removed from each shoulder.

And the interior tag. The company is still in business. Looks like I've got an old police jacket. Maybe from the OPPs?

That's the Canadian Talon! As seen on Brimacos as well. Sometimes they were labeled "lightning". Nice jacket. I like it!

That's a great, utilitarian jacket. You're right, there are a lot of interesting useful elements to it, but it still has a very simple and elegant profile. I'm not sure how I feel about the open, shirt-style chest pocket, but I love the pencil slot. That practical design and label makes me wonder if it wasn't purchased and given out by some company as a uniform jacket. Nice find.

Yes, it's most likely a former police jacket. Outdoor Outfits Ltd. has been in business in Toronto since the 1940s and they continue to make law enforcement uniforms for the Canadian market. I might email some pics to the company to see if they can tell me anything else about the jacket. I know it's no older than 1972, because that's when the company moved to the address listed on the inner tag.

I would guess the open pocket next to the pen slot is designed for a notepad or ticket pad. That open pocket is just the right size for an iPhone.

I'll never know for sure, but the jacket might have been a Windsor Police jacket. I found some patches online that seem to match the outline of the areas where the shoulder patches were removed. Plus, my area is really close to Windsor.

EDIT: Forgot to add that I found the same jacket, same size, on a Japanese website. Listed for a heck of a lot more than what I paid, and mine is in much better condition.

That's a fascinating piece of historical information. I'm consistently amazed at the depth of knowledge of the folks on TFL. Knowing that it was a Canadian police garment makes the jacket even more interesting to me, and now I really do like the front pocket knowing that it was purpose built like that. I'm waiting on a fit jacket from Carrie for an Aero Type III. Gonna scratch my Type 3 itch and my battered tan HH itch at the same time...interested to see how that hide works with that pattern.
