OK we've seen them, huge balls of keys that some folks tote around with probably 20 on a ring. How many do you normally carry and can you name what each are for? Bet you have some you never use.

I have:
key to old Dodge beater we have
key to house
key to steel rolling gate in yard
key to Packard ignition
key to Packard trunk
key to Packard glove box

Just 5. two for the house, garage (man door), car, and garden gate.

I have a whole drawer full of keys in my cupboard though, for everything from my '66 Mustage that I sold seven years ago to who knows what.

I refuse

to carry more than a car key and a house key, preferably to my car and my house. I have over the years carried many more than that bare minimum, but no more. Besides, and I hope this doesn't sound too much like a dandy, bulging wads of keys do nothing for the lines of my suits. ;)

For work I have a big ring of keys (probably 20 or more) that provide access to secure areas of the hospital. I can name where all of them go. One key is a huge skeleton key, about four inches long and weighs probably a 1/2 pound or more, that opens the old doors to the wards (our hospital was built in 1875, and some of these keys have been in use since). That big ring of keys, combined with my (usual) three-piece navy pinstripe suit and fedora, is probably why I once overheard one of our patients telling his family, "There goes the WARDEN." :)

In my pocket, however, I only carry my car key. The other "required" keys (house, farm, fire department, other cars, etc.) are on individual rings on a big ring that I keep in the glove box of whatever vehicle I drive.

Speaking of "glove boxes", is that what they still call that space in the dash of a vehicle? If so, that's strange, as how many people actually put gloves in the "glove box" these days? [huh]

I've been known to put workout gloves and knit gloves in my glove box.

As for keys, I used to have only two, but I'm starting to collect.

house
garage
garden gate
car
car trunk (why 2?)
post box
ex boyfriends post box (I forward his mail to him still)
my grandmother's old skeleton key

My work has security card for the garage and then keyless entry to the suite. The card usually stays in the car.

As few as possible:

- house = apartment
- letterbox
- office
- office cabinet

Other keys for another office cabinet and a laptop computer cabinet are in the first cabinet. When we use tha car, which is rare, we take the key separately. Or my wife does, actually.

Keys, that's SO 2006. I live in the future where everything is opened by a palm pad built into the door. Just a press of my thumb and Im in.

I tried the Doc Savage method of carrying some radioactive material that would open my door as I got near but the skin under my pocket started glowing.
On one keyring I my two car keys on the other key ring I carry three building keys. I keep them on seperate rings so if I leave or lose a ring somewhere I still have options. If I lock the keys in the car I can still get in the house. If I misplace my house keys I can drive somewhere fun.:D

Sincerely,
The WOLF

I hate carrying bulky things in my pockets (ruins the lines of my suits), and I hate carrying big, jangly keyrings.

I have a little leather thing in which my keys are... and they are:
  • House key
  • Tiny key for Gibson guitar case
  • Tiny key for other Gibson guitar case
  • Tiny key for Fender case
  • Tiny key for luggage (same key opens about 6 of the wee luggage locks)
  • Fob for front door entrance of building. This lies flat in the key pouch pocket.

I don't have a car, hence no car keys. My last car had this big, complicated key that was bigger than the thing in which I carry my keys now.

Why can't they just make normal car keys nowadays? Why does everything have to have a gimmick?

I have:

Key to our family summer home

2 to our apartment, top and bottom lock.
2 to my parents' apartment, top and bottom lock.
1 for my locker at work.
1 for the wine locker I rent at a local wine shop.
My car has a card key which is tucked into my wallet, and the spare key just in case is in a pocket of the bag I lug around for work, and not in my key case.

Way too many, and I'm trying to pare it down. Finally settled on having 3 separate keyrings. Daily I carry:

house key
po box key
parents' house key
parents' po box key
p-38 can opener
huge car key
