After much help from mayserwegener, I am up to speed on showing off my "medium rare" hat collection.

A nice lighter felt Knox Homburg, no mfg tags left under the sweat, and only the standard logo. Dating is problematic, but a wonderful hat. Had Mike at NW Hats put a liner in as it was missing, so what the hell, I had him use his beautiful NW Hats logo liner, probably blasphemy on this Knox, but showy.

Im a noob and I have a question. You buy vintage Hormburgs because todays quality is diminished. Ive read several posts where Mike at NW did some work to clean up these vintage hats. Mike sells new Hormburgs. Would one of these not be excellent quality or at least better than one coming from a large hat company? Is the issue quality felt can not be had these days regardless of who builds a hat?

I make every effort to find the oldest, best vintage hat. Of course, I'm a history geek. There is a large disparity in quality between a 1940s Knox or Stetson Homburg and a brand new hipster ready Bailey or Dorfman Pacific. Or better yet, have Mike make you a custom Homie!! He has a couple of styles on his website. I'm seriously thinking about a dove grey beaver Homburg (vintage or Bespoke) I'm not picky!

I would have to say anything a custom hatter would make would be "comparable" to vintage. Certainly the felt quality may not be as good as a 40s Knox or Schoble, but the craftsmanship will be top-notch. Stetson re-introduced the St. Regis last year - soft crown Homburg. I'd like to see what one of those is like given how they've stepped up their game in some other areas.

I am skeptical. Would have to have one in hand. My major concern is the brim (stiffness, flange, curl and binding).

Yeah, I understand your design considerations and the need for it to have the right brim profile. I was merely mentioning the quality of the craftsmanship, but the design consideration is important, too.

Yeah, I understand your design considerations and the need for it to have the right brim profile. I was merely mentioning the quality of the craftsmanship, but the design consideration is important, too.

Latest addition: Churchill Homburg. I'm really starting to love this style of hats! The felt is sift enough to shape without steam. Getting used to the shorter curled brim. Seeking feedback regarding any particulars. All I know? It's old 'n golden!!
