Homburg Nation

Picked this one up yesterday. I left it in the shop once before, but these things sometimes haunt me in my sleep (paranomal hat-activity?). It was still there but it looked a bit sad really. But after only a little brushing and steaming it remembered what it was.
Battersby Superior homburg in black, size 58. Quite a wide brim for a homburg at 6,5cm, crown at 11cm at the pinch. Lovely felt and well done finishing. The creases in the ribbon will come out after a little more TLC. The way the bow and ribbon are done make me think it might be even older that the late forties to early fifties I think it's from.

Georg Fischer Wien, 59cm probably early 1950s. The felt on this Homburg is very soft in hand and a fine example of a very high quality felt that is of a heavier weight. The over all construction (including components) and condition of the hat are fantastic. This is my first Georg Fischer Wien find so very happy about finding such a great specimen.

Great find, Steve. I admit I have never heard of the brand before. Very nice looking homburg. The brim treatment looks to be different from the usual way it was usually done.

Stefan, Thanks! It's a very well made hat. I have a couple other Georg Fischer Wien hats (not mine) on my website. I don't know anything about them but Georg Fischer is listed in "Austrian Hat Industry Guide (1926)".

Now thats a beauty! Love the crown crease and the way the sweatbands were made back in the day. Delicate stitching too.

I just won this at auction and expect to receive it next week.

I'm not sure of vintage or condition but 7 1/2 homburgs are not too common (unless you like wool). I'm scared that it will be too small as it's rare that I can fit in anything less than 7 5/8. If it doesn't fit I'll list it here in a he classifieds.

Congrats ... hope it fits. I messed with the image for the size tag and it almost looks like 7-1/8. Worth the risk at that price!

I agree with your assessment of the tag. The image as provided was less clear. If it is in fact a 7 1/8 I'll have to either return it or give it away. Those lucky dogs with small heads are spoiled and think $20 is a fortune to spend on a pristine 1930s hat. :)

I wasn't looking for a homburg. I was bidding on a Resistol western and saw this Dobbs at the last minute. It was bid or let it go. I bid, and as usual it won't work out for me. I've learned to laugh at these...mistakes. It's laugh or get mad and I don't have the energy to get mad these days.

Know anyone who wants a 7 1/8 Dobbs homburg?

My black Melton beat my gray Biltmore to delivery. This was listed as a bowler/derby but it was apparent from the photos it was an open crown homburg. New old stock. With this and the Biltmore, all I need now is a chocolate brown homburg.

And after my last Selco sweat falling apart on me I've treated this one very gently, but it is apparent it is in sound shape and is 100% serviceable.

Thats a good snag , I messaged the guy about one I saw , but the open crown was only 5" and I figured 5 1/2" was what I needed . It was a nice Hat though and the guy was nice . Did you look into the Hatter ? He makes nice Hats : www.selcohatters.com

I too asked a question but then remembering all the times I got beat out I went ahead and bought it before he could answer. I'm not sure how he got the 5" crown measurement for you, mine is every bit of 5.75" in open crown. I'll definitely check out the store too.

Brent, Good to see it arrived. Looks great! Does it appear to be made by the same company as the Selco "Beaver"? Is it the same / similar felt? I am not sure about the Selco connection with the Melton trademark. They must have acquired it at some point in time.

The Selco and Melton hats are NOS from my guess 1960s to 1970s. They currently are selling Tonak hats under the Selentino trademark. I am not sure when they switched from Selco. This NOS Melton doesn't appeared to made by Tonak but I could be wrong. They also have used the Hückel trademark on and off over the years. They also have used a Hückel / Tonak based Selco label. I am sure their relationship with Tonak is tied to the Jewish Orthodox market. Definitely an interesting + mysterious situation (at least to me). Maybe you can ask him for a brief history of the company? :)

Thanks, I'll check it that shop. I didn't measure it before creasing, but it certainly doesn't look to be low crowned to my eye.

I'm just about positive they are made by the same company. The felt is as identical as I'm capable of determining. Again, nothing under the sweat and no country of origin marked. Everything about them looks to be the same other than the styling.

The seller also has some old Mallory and Barbisio hats. So far none of those have come up in my size but I hope they will and that their provenance will be simpler.

@deadlyhandsome that Hat has a good crown height . The Hatter is Jewish , and makes Hats for the Orthodox Jewish community . It seems his father or Grandfather is who made the Hats whose name is Israel Cohen & Sons . The guy I messaged with was a son or grandson whose name was Hiem or something similar maybe Haim , Hiam . I deleted the message . All the Hats I saw were Black , and of good quality . If I can find the Hat I was looking at I'll post it .

I made a offer on one of his hats.I saw in the pics that the sweatband was separateing and mentioned that but he did not accept my offer or counter it.Told him the sweat would more than likely have to be replaced.

I didn't even know Homburgs could be worn formally? What type of occasions are they acceptable, and are formal homburgs only limited to black?

I too made an offer on another hat and never received a response.

I looked at the original photos in the listing and I'm still unable to see any indication that the sweat was separating or otherwise failing. I see he now has a 7 3/8 hat in something other than black, but all the other listings I've seen have been all black.
