A tip of the hat to you all,

I found this site not all that long ago, and I literally have scanned EVERY SINGLE page of the hat forum and read all of the threads that caught my attention  . It took me awhile (imagine that!). BUT when I began, I knew absolutely nothing...and now I know everything there is to know about fedoras. So, if there are any questions please feel free to ask :D lol. There were so many threads that I really wanted to take part in, but patience won out and I held off. Great site!

I'm extremely happy I found this forum. I always wear a hat or cap. Case in point: One day, a few years ago, I went to work without a hat. I had worked there for about a year and a half. Hardly anyone recognized me. They all had to do double takes! Everyone thought I wore a hat because of baldness (actually, I have very thick hair).

I've been wanting to buy a fedora for a long time, but living where I do, the only ones I've ever found are either junk or they are the Indiana Jones style. I like the IJ style, but the crown is just too high for my tastes. Who knows, maybe I'd get used to it[huh] . After reading through the threads, I've pretty much decided on an Akubra with a open crown. Not sure which model yet. I'm deciding between the Stylemaster, Syndey, Bogart, Squatter, Casual, or Federation. I'd prefer to buy a US made hat, but it seems Akubra stands above the fold for the money. Eventually I would like to go custom, but I think I would be a fool to do that without really knowing what I want. Do I understand correctly that I can purchase any Akubra and request it as an open crown? (How far I've come, I didn't even know what an open crown was before finding this forum, let alone why I would want one;) )

I'm 6'2" 210 lbs. and my hat size around 7 5/8. I mention all of those dimensions just in case any of you would have recommendations based on them

Well, this intro is probably longer than it should be, so I'll stop here.

Thanks

I find myself re-reading some of the threads over and over again. So much info to pick up on and the expertise here combined with the 'warmth' of the Lounge makes it a frequent destination.

Hello fellow Michigander, Mustang! Love your avatar! As fatwoul will tell you, it's the UK that gave the Mustang its muscle...Rolls-Royce Merlin in-line to be exact, and it's North American that produced my favorite fighter of late, the F-86 Sabre, so fatwoul and I are destined to be among your friends here at the Lounge. I lean toward caps, he leans toward fedoras, but along with others like Indycop, RBH and, razzman, apipeguy, deherrman1, sphughes, and Matt, all top guys as well, you'll find the Lounge's greatest asset is the memebership. I have.

Howdy, I'm not to far from ya either...I work in Saginaw (live near Beaverton)
I'm a huge WWII buff (hence the avatar). Have been since I was 6 years old. It all began with my grandfather and I, talking about it constantly (mostly him talking, me listening). Lucky for me, he enjoyed it. He was in the 5th Army Air Force.

You will love the Lounge!

The taller crowns will grow on you.:D
I have an Akubra Campdarft on in my avatar, a really great fedora. It also comes open crowned.
Is there any way to prevent them from growing any taller than they already are? :p

Definitely, I only read the posts that interested me at the time. There are a ton that I didn't read...yet. As knowledge increases and tastes/interests change, I'm sure I'll be perusing other threads.

Per one of the threads, I found out about Henry the Hatter in Detroit. I plan on making a trip within the next few months to try on some hats. Knowing myself, I'll probably leave with one. Whenever possible, I try to support shops like that. Even if it costs more...PROVIDED, I'm not sacrificing quality!

Mustang,

Welcome to the Lounge. It's good to see the Michigan ranks growing.

I think that any one of the Akubras you mentioned would look good. As you may have already read, the Federation is a big hat. However, it sounds like it would work for you given your height. I purchased a Federation a couple of months ago. It looks a little big on me (I'm still getting used to it), but I am only about 5'10".

As you wear hats over time you will likely notice the larger dimensions growing on you. I started out wearing stingie brims - everything else seemed to look huge on me when I looked in the mirror. I just wasn't used to seeing myself in a hat. I eventually phased into larger dimensions and now own a Federation. It's a big hat on me, so I am still playing with the bash to bring it down a bit. Now when I look in the mirror wearing a stingie I think that it looks too small as I have gotten used to the larger hats.

I haven't had a chance to visit Henry the Hatter in Detroit. I would recommend visiting so you can try on some hats with different styles and dimensions. Almost all of my hat purchases have been online and I always worry about whether or not they will look right on me.

brim width

Actually, I think I will have a harder time getting used to short brims. The tall crowns are what I'm not used to.

I was just saying that things are relative. After wearing a taller crowned hat for awhile you may put on an old hat and think that a lower crown looks odd relative the the higher one.

If it helps, I read somewhere here that the distance from the middle of your forehead to your chin should be about the same as the distance from the middle of your forehead to the top of your hat. (My apologies for not being able to credit the individual that originally made this point.) I guess if the crown is too tall for your face you could just drop your chin and walk around with your mouth open [huh].

Gotcha. I'm sure you are right.

I will be getting an IJ style hat eventually. I'll definitely keep that in mind when the time comes!
