Hats and Drinks - A Match Made in Heaven

Wow! The list of whiskey purveyors reads better than my local liquor store. That sounds like a splendid adventure. I look forward to your reflections Jack. A grand opportunity.

Cheers, Eric -
Several of those are local so I concentrated on those who aren't. There is a first annual Whiskey Expo coming up at a local casino in early Nov. I kind of compared the two lists. The Expo will have seminars, some retail vendors, & a whiskey auction.

I made note of Cedar Ridge since Joe @Mm25 spoke highly of their product.

Enjoyed Voodoo Ranger Juicy Haze IPA while tailgating before the Zac Brown Band concert and a visit to the VIP lounge.

All thanks to the band especially John Driskell Hopkins who went out of his way to make this happen and our daughter Megan for putting it all together and allowing the family to have this great tribute to her Uncle Danny and his favorite band.

Morning breakfast beer was a Deschutes Hzy PIA. Nothing like some eggs, toast and bacon with an IPA.

Today I am enjoying a lunch of Seafood pho soup and Duc Tien (Seafood fried rice). If you prepare the bone broth way ahead of time, lunch is quick and easy. I fried the rice on wood coals outside while wearing an Adam Pacesetter (brown w/gilled ribbon treatment). A Surly Delicious Pilsner beer make a great accompaniment.

They have reopened the border so I can now travel down the I5 to Oregon, land of great beer. The only issue is I need a $200 PCR covid test to get back in to Canada so no short little jaunts across the border for now. But damn I miss my trips to Oregon and biking along the Deschutes River with beers at the end.

Thank you Jack. 100% agree! My current diet though has me relegated to that and a few other ultra lights… and whiskey ;)

Sure makes me appreciate good beer when I take a break though.
The clock has been working against me for Drinks in pics. I had to chauffeur yesterday getting home in time for several fingers x 4 drams of Lagavulin 16. This VS was my chauffeurs hat.

This morn I went out for a Scooters Double Shooter with this VS (still a work in process) but somehow failed to get a pic of the Shooter.

Terrific chauffer hat Jack. Way to be the responsible one. A The reward is worth the driving.

Ah espresso is the way to start a morning.

Yesterday evening was a Guinness moment.

After lunch I sipped some Benromach Wood Finished whiskey. The Sassicaia wine barrel finish, 24 months, gives it a red wine taste, wood taste and smell. The smell is the smell you get after cutting some wood in the shop and a bit of smoke. A winey finish. The "sweet" is the oak casks. A very complex tasty. You get a small salty and bit of brine in this Speyside and it delivers it simply behind the scenes. A good whiskey to sip and read.

The smallest Speyside whiskey distiller has made a great Saturday afternoon whiskey. Not super special, but a very interesting taste and easy sampling.

Sounds like a good one for Day drinkin' & cogitating at home, Eric. Save some back for the dreary dark winter days ahead.

so knocking back shots of this sweet and mellow mix of cinnamon liqueur and Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey makes for one hell of a shot… or four! Lol!
Always enjoy looking around the room in your pics. Everything seems to fit the theme & era.

Since I missed my usual weekly Tex Mex last night, I slipped out for some tonight under a GGCD.

My wife doesn’t drive, so it was water for me as she sipped her pale ale at my stepson’s place. I made up for it when we got home with a Yona yona pale ale, View attachment 370186
a black IPA,

and a South African Cabernet Sauvignon.

The wine was shared with Etsuko.
It was my first time out in my new Federation IV.

Shoe; Well done sir. Being responsible is not painful, IMO, when you consider the "long game." Your "every night" beer as I read about it sounds delicious. A medium ale (Cascade Hops) with a balanced bitter/sweet taste sounds like a reward to a designated driver. The Stark Conde Cab has positive reviews. My local wine vendor stocks it. I will have to consider it when I need a Cabernet.

Congrats on the opportunity to visit your step-son. A crazy time of life makes reminds us to cherish the small things, like visiting with family.

My Sunday breakfast beer is a Founders Porter. I read some reviews before posting thinking I could use some fresh perspective on this Porter. The reviews I read this morning sounded dismissive as they said this is their standard for Porters. Standard - OK. I buy into their description. But to say standard and not to write that being a standard barer of the Porter classification this beer is an excellent tasting beer is missing the point, IMO. Knowing that Founders Porter is distributed widely in the Midwest and other points in the US does not diminish this excellent Porter taste. It is cozy and thick on the tongue and has just enough of the malted barley for the coffee and bitterness taste I enjoy. Certainly a go to cool weather Porter, but each bottle is delicious (IMO).

The above is a Sunday rant after reading a bunch of beer reviews.

Yona Yona does indeed mean “every night” but it also carries connotations of good times being had. The beers from this brewery (Ya-ho Brewing in Japanese, but for some reason, Yoho Brewing in English) are among the best I have had in Japan and are far and away the best value craft beers I’ve come across here. The “Craft Zaurus Black IPA” is not readily available. It comes up once in a while for customers like myself, who get a delivery every second month.

BTW: Terrific beer "glass" and wine glass accoutrement.
The porous nature of the wood fired beer vessel does two things. First, it creates head - especially if it’s dry when you pour. If you’re not careful, it can create too much head. But it also makes the head incredibly creamy, to the extent that it is not at all unpleasant, even if you did produce more head than intended.

To be quite honest, I can’t see myself purchasing the Cab Sav again. It wasn’t bad, but more mild than I prefer. Mild on the nose, mild on the pallet, mild tannins. Maybe a little vanilla & a little oak. On my first mouthful the vanilla & oak was followed by a fruitiness reminiscent of…grapes. I don’t recall ever describing a wine as tasting of grapes before! All in all, it was just…mild. At the same price point I would go for an Aussie Cab Sav.
