Hat Liners: To Be Or Not To Be

While I understand that those beautiful silk liners with a vintage hat should remain inside them, I also literally feel better in a hat without out them. The cheap Burlington hats I found recently, thankfully do not have them and I guess it maight have something to do with male pattern baldness in my case, but I don't miss the liners at all. They're hot, they stick to my scalp on top, which doesn't have the normal hair covering, and I just wondered if anyone else does without them, if they have hats from which they don't mind removing them.

I know that it was common back in the day to remove a liner. The reasons for one as you stated and to make the hat 'cooler' in warm weather.
I personally like them in my hats, but I also see no reason for you not to remove one if that is what you want.
I would just be sure to keep the correct liner in the hat box, so that at any later time it could be replaced.

Fear not, so have I done!

I, too, have the same affliction...uh, I mean attribute...of male pattern baldness. Still, I like leaving the liners in. What I do make a point of removing are any plastic liners that cover the inside of the crown. I find that these absolutely tend to make things uncomfortably hot and stick to the top of my head.

I have a crew cut and do not mind the liners. I like them because they dress up a hat. No one sees it but I know it is there.

Summers are a bit more bearable in a felt hat without a liner!

I wear goop in my hair so I keep the liners as a barrier, but I can't stand the plastic bit on the crown, a hideous innovation that makes the inside of your hat hotter than a tandoor oven and unwearable in the summer. Most of the Akubra hats I have came with the plastic in the crown, so I cut the plastic out.

Actually, it's become clear to me from these responses that it isn't the pretty silk liner that is as much a problem for me as it is the plastic on the top. It's there to protect from oil and perspiration. If that hat doesn't rest on your head, there should be no problem. But some of mine do.

Hey, DeanGlen --

Your new avatar caught my eye -- I see that you, like me, will be rooting on the Tigers tonight. Had a line on a ticket for tonight's game, but have decided that my living room is preferable to upper 40's and rain. :( Regardless of the weather, the fans here in Detroit are psyched!!! :cheers1:

Some of mine do too. I sometimes put a piece of tissue paper in there as a barrier between the plastic liner and my head.

:eek:fftopic: I remember '68, I was ten years old. A magic year in my life! Started little league that year. I love Cobb's expression in that picture. They don't make'em like him anymore. Go Tigers! Thanks for noticin' Ty, Jimmy!
