There were a few bids between us though. I hope it looks this good or better when I get it. :D

Ahhh, yes, that very unique hat... Well, I played my bid and your's was higher, that's how it works. I, too, am glad it was won by someone here - just like the wonderful grey Open Road I lost to Pilgrim a few weeks back. Knowing it is someone here on the Fedora Lounge means I just get to be happy for the winner and hopefully see pictures after the hat arrives at its new home. :)

Of course I will share pictures. I think I might even have the ad for this hat. I'll have to check. My photobucket account is telling me I need to buy more space soon. The nerve of them! I only have 407 pictures stored there. :icon_smil
I don't think Magnus was at all telling people that they should not bid for something on eBay just because we know the person. However, as was said before, I really do not bid on anything I know someone else here has bid on for two reasons:
1.) I have plenty of hats as it is.
2.) Let someone else have a chance.
This does not apply to singular hats that I have only seen once though. Odd colors, ribbons and styles always find room in my collection and it gives me a chance to use them as a knowledge base to answer questions here.
The Dunlap is a perfect example of this. It has an odd ribbon treatment and most Dunlaps you find are stingy brims. This makes sense because Dunlaps were expensive hats for their time. Dunlap, Knox and Cavanagh were competing not for price but for prestige. Therefore finding wide brims of any of these marques is tough. Not many existed in the first place due to price concerns and those that were bought were used---used up in many cases. Eventually Knox and Dunlap saw they had common interests and the same market so they merged. Later Cavanagh became part of the same group.

Regards to all,

J

I think these things always depend a bit on your own approach.

I love Whippets, but I own a dark brown and a light grey, and if I see one in a color similar to one I already have, I'm going to lay off if I see another Lounger involved. Conversely, If I see one in a color that I really want and don't have, then as my daughter says "Oh, it's ON, now!". Kindness only goes so far.

And I'm like others, that in many auctions I won't jump in till the last minute. In such a case, we all just take our chances, don't we?? No worries, as far as I'm concerned - it's all part of the game.
