Maintcoder, I hope you get that Whippet. I'm laying off in deference to you, but I think the price tag will go $100 or more. Be ready to step up at the last minute (or the last 5 seconds).

Which one... I have had terrible luck lately!

That would be this one:

There were a few bids between us though. I hope it looks this good or better when I get it. :D

You will never see my id until seconds before the end of the auction anyway but it is the same as my id here. :)

Didn't I just recently see your name in the action a bit earlier than that? On that two-tone Royal Stetson? You won it, as I recall, at a reasonable price. I opted against bidding because, 1.) I figured the price would reach a level to which I was unwilling to go (it didn't, barely), and 2.) I'm disinclined to bid up the price on a fellow Lounger, especially one who has been as helpful and informative as you.
I'm fairly new to eBay, but it seems to me that if we get in the habit of setting snipes, we defeat the purpose of knowing one another's monikers. But knowing that others here are in the action could well prevent us from setting astronomical maximum bids. If there's something about the workings of eBay I misunderstand here, please set me straight.

The name didn't stop others and in the end I had to snipe it anyway. :p I set that up just to see if the name thing would work. There are others out there who do not respect such rules, check the pair of Borsalinos if you want to see it in action, so if you want something set the snipe. :fedora:

This could be a good idea. I could add the field to members profile. It could even be searchable. Thoughts?

Done. Go ahead and add it to your profiles.

Very good of you MK, to have moved so swiftly on the idea. How will we access user names of those fellow/gal Loungers bidding on the auctions. To this point, barely more than 24 hours since the idea was floated, registration of auction names has been implemented. What have you got in mind for simple, useful retrieval?

Oh dear, I'd worried that something like this could happen.

Why on earth should a FLounger be disinclined to bid on a hat because another FLounger is bidding? Or be made to feel bad because they bid against a FLounger? This is why most of you will never know my bidding ID (though some do already). I think this whole concept (of giving out our eBay bidder IDs) is a mistake. There is no etiquette regarding bidding on an eBay auction (in terms of worrying who you're bidding against).

I forsee antagonism. It's bad to be outbid all the time; It's even worse to be reminded that the person outbidding you all the time is a person you know. The anonymity of eBay is one of its best features. Sure, i've seen things posted on the lounge by other winners that i'd been bidding on. I'd hate to know in advance that i was expected to give way on something because another member had bid.

Anybody here win that super keen Cavanagh 2 nights ago that I did not? That appears to be a tremendous hat. If anybody here, I can't wait to see more and better pictures.

Hi...I completely respect your thought on this and I agree in part. I don't think that anyone should ever be made to feel bad for bidding. If you read my origional thought carefully you will see that I was stating that (in my opinon) the "Casual" bidding when you didn't really care if you get the item or not is what runs a price up. I would never expect anyone to step out of an aution on something they wanted. Auctions are "competitive/game like" in nature. I grew up attendig them on a weekly basis. I always prefer to know the competitiion as it allows me to gauge my bidding. The reason that the bidding at eBay is private is mainly because it makes them WAY more money.

I also DO NOT ENCOURAGE OR AGREE with open discussion of auctions in the Lounge (not that I could "DO" anything about it....just stating my thoughts) Those discussions sholud be in Private communication only. Not "Slapping anyone's hands...because again...I have NO authority here.

In the loing run folks we do need to remember that we are just talking about hats....there is no need for hurt feelings over missing a hat....another will come along. Its not life and death. If we behave with kindness and thoughtfulness we will be treated in the same manner.

Again all...just my thoughts. Take them...agree...dissagree...thats wonderful...open dialouge only helps things.

Thanks,
M

I'm not backing off for anyone, if I want it bad enough, and have the cash, I will do what I can to get it. And that's all I gots to say about that!

Magus, i agree entirely. But i think not bidding just because someone you know is bidding is silly. If you want it, you want it; it doesn't matter who else is bidding. This wasn't intended as a reply to anyone in particular, just a comment about the general principle of outing ones eBay ID.

I only mention it because this came up a couple months ago with a suit auction i was looking at. It turns out i had no intention of going for the suit. But i got a PM, which was either asking my permission to bid, or warning me off (I know he wasn't warning me off, but if i hadn't had the interaction i had already, it could have been construed that way. I mean, bid if you want to bid. I don't care. I'll bid if i want to bid.

I can just see a lot of antagonism in the future. The sort of situation where people are going to send PMs saying like "dammit, Man, why won't you let me win just one hat auction". How long before someone PMs someone else with the same head size saying "don't bid" or, more passive-aggressively "isn't this one nice. I'm going to try to get it. Just to let you know". This will not be healthy for the FLounge in any way.

Well I hope that will not be the case...and if it becomes that I trust that MK will yank it and credit it to a failed experiment. As I had only good intensions with the first post. In any case...If you see me on an auction...feel free to tip your hat...or not...across the field of honor and we will enjoy the fray! ;)

(Dang...all those years of competitive sword fighting are starting to show)

For me, the answer is...

If I want a hat bad enough, it doesn't matter who else wants it. And I certainly expect others to feel the same way. That said, I am cognizant of members' IDs, and will avoid hats of less than rabid interest if there are Loungers in the bout.

While there is camaraderie here, it's less about being on the same team and more about playing in the same league. There's what happens on the field, then there's tossing back a cold one and having a great time chewing on the exploits.

I realized some time ago my heartfelt participation here would make it more difficult to reasonably acquire what I so treasure. Adding even small drops to the pool of knowledge means more will drink. As with every involvement, each gain means loss; each loss, gain. The issue is identifying both, and determining whether it's worth it. In this case, yes.

And face it, there is no inherent "fairness" in the auction concept. Never has been. The one with the most money wins. Beyond that, your only hope is reconnaissance, timing and luck (as in finding a Lee 100 for $9.99).

My ID here and on ebay is the same, and I almost never bid early because it's my feeling it can only drive up the price. No one ever bids early to keep the price down.

But I don't mind losing to someone willing to share. Members' pictures and posts have been invaluable to me. If I can't get the hat, at least I can learn more about it. If I do get a hat worth talking about, I'll share it with everybody here.

What irks me is the black hole into which many of the best hats fall. In each hat size, it's one or three people, often lurkers here, who suck them up. It's those -- the ones who come to the Lounge to take, and give back nothing -- I find odious. Makes me want to cough up a hocker.
