I used to have a swell pompadour – kept it in place with Crew Fiber. Since the forehead went fallow I now wear a sort of Princeton Caesar. It's extremely low maintenance and no more than 3/4" long anywhere, but it's not quite my era somehow. I would let what's left of the top grow long enough to plaster back, but when not plastered it tends to go all Larry Fine on me.

Here's a question: if and when you go to an old-fashioned barbershop for a haircut, do you leaf through the Playboy magazines? Be honest, gents.

I buzz my own hair (I use a small handheld mirror to get the back and sides). I would, however, consider a barber if barbers still shaved... such a shame that HIV killed that. :(

Shortened the hair a bit... what do you think?

Looking good

Since you asked, you new haircut is much more flattering to you than the old long-on-top, scraped-on-sides-and-back.

This isn't the Powder Room, so it's okay if I post mine, right? :D

Not overly vintage, but a pretty classic cut. Got it layered because my hair is a heavy mess without it. No, I have no idea why I look angry in the first picture. -_-

I used to love going to the barber as a kid... now it's $14.95 a pop.

My brush? A 1930's Merkur heavy duty double edge safety razor!

Hello,

I also had a hard time finding a decent 1930's-1940's haircut. I used to have it cut WWII German Army style, but decided that where it was shaved down was too short for being a U-Boat captain (I choose to only do an 'on board' impression that way, I don't have to shave my face either...and I like it this way.)

Anyway, I remembered seeing a photo I liked of a vintage haircut in one of Villiers' books of a sailmaker. I printed out the photo (though it isn't the clearest, but it does help whomever is cutting my hair) and now my hair is decently 'matched' with my beard growth.

Here is the photo:

I managed to come across Royal Crown pomade at a cheap store (.75 a 'can') and at the moment prefer that to anything else I've used.

Normally I just have a #3 on the sides and a #2 on the back. The top has stayed. Getting a part in the morning is the hardest "part".
Train your hair to do the things you want it to. Hair has a mind of it's own. Best advice.

Do you finger wave the front, or does it just naturally do that?

And having seen it in person, yours is the most perfect vintage haircut in the USA!

well, thank you sir. Whose is everwhere else, may I ask? :p Hair is hair to me. Even if you don't have it, it's still stylish.

It just naturally does that. I have wavy hair. It's more difficult than it looks to part it.

Hey Guys,

I've been lurking here for a while and, firstly, should say how helpful you've all been in my search for information!!

Right now I'm having a major dilemma with my hair in that I can't properly explain the cut I want to the hairdressers. Barber's are FAR inbetween where I am so it's really down to finding a good enough photo to illustrate my point to the uninformed.

What I'm after is some shots of a real short back and sides look. I'm after SHORT and tight with a long top (classic Swing approach) as I brush it back most of the time. All the hairdressers have an obsession with blending the short sides into the long top which leaves me with only about an inch of short on the sides before it starts getting much longer on the way up.

The closest I could find on here was this:

But it's a little too small to clearly show what I'm after. Any help at all?

I'm desperate.

Thanks!
