Blimey, it's been a while since we had anything from Gustin, but I see from my email box that they've finally got around to doing those fabled sweatshirts. Here's the blurb, though, I notice the price has been left off until they are launched tomorrow:

"If you’ve been following us for a while, you know that we’ve been talking about our sweatshirt for . . . too long. It’s a seemingly basic garment, but sometimes these are the hardest to really get right. For us it was about investing the time to get the perfect sweatshirt for a price that's unbeatable. We’re finally done and tomorrow is just the start. You'll see some amazing fabrics across a wide range of weights, colors, compositions and origins.

"A classic sweatshirt is like a great pair of denim - you must respect the history. If you keep the construction authentic, use the best fabrics, and get the fit just right, you have a garment to enjoy for years. A proper sweatshirt never goes out of style. Take one look at ours and you can see we got all the details right. Raglan sleeves, flat locked seams, extra wide cuffs and waistband, reinforced neck v. These details are a must and make the garment scream classic. For fabric, there's no better way to start than all-American. For our launch, we're using the perfect mid-weight, loopback French Terry milled right in California. It works alone or as a layering piece, and our garment wash gives it a lived-in feel. Finally, just because it looks classic doesn't mean the fit needs to be boxy. We've created a more tailored fit so when you throw this sweatshirt on with denim or chinos you have a clean look."

May be great, may be average, but I am on the market for a sweater and it's likely to be either this - depending on price/quality - or another Buzz.

I know I sound like an old duffer, but I still think of sweatshirts as something your mother would get you at Woolworth's for $2.99, along with a few pairs of gym socks. Steve McQueen has a lot to answer for.

Just had a look at the Gustin sweats, and it's pretty unspectacular: thinnish French terry cloth, not loop-wheeled and no tube knits, which is what they had been promising back in the day, and the colours are drab to say the least. It's a shame that G seem to have lapsed into what I call expensive 'clobber' clothing: using high-end materials to make items that look no different from mall stock. No wonder I've stopped looking at their site.

Yep. I was up in the wee hours watching the rugby World Cup when the email came through. It's not a heart stopper, but at $37 it's reasonable I guess?

Honestly, I can see just by looking at the lining that it doesn't come anywhere near a Buzz sweater. They're soft on the inside, really solidly made and flatter the wearer rather than just hanging on them. I'd get one off Rakuten Global, pay the extra, and know that it's made to last. Also, there are more colours in the world than black, blue and bloody grey.

At $37 I baked the navy. I admit it's not what I was hoping for but this is really a test case for the shape/fit for me. In my experience Gustin tend to offer safer colors/fabrics up front as a proof of concept and then venture out. If the fit works and they get into some thicker/nicer indigo fabrics under $100 than I could see it being a solid offering. Not Buzz, but solid

I also backed the navy.

Updates are that I love my Okayamas more and more specially after the wash, they are really intense greencast now.

I got some shirts, the herringbone flanell, selvagde chambray, also 3 workshirts secondhand, khaki, zimbabwe and the mighty wabisabi. Also 9 t-shirts and entered the Antique unsanforized competition on Selvadge and style forum.

Not much else goin on, planning on backing more of the OCBD`s tho wich I think is a very good offering. When compared to a "high end"-fashion house the Gustin blue is better. I got blue and white but plan on getting charcoal, wine and seafoam or hunter. Mayyybe black.

Thus far for me, the nicest jeans from Gustin is my Zimbabwe, although my Okayama is a close 2nd.

I've always thought the Okays and Zimbabweans were my two best buys. I think the only Gustins I don't wear very often are the umber, no idea why.

I seem to wear the Zimby's and The Darks a lot. The other 3 pair sit in the drawer. If I could sell the unworn ones, I'd have the cash for a pair of SJC's :)

Sell them on selvedge and style forum.

Btw my very best pair is the loomstate hands down, and the grey x black herringbones (wore them today, starting to fade good) I also like the naturals and the grey silk altho they dont get alot of wear.

I know this is a somewhat dated question, but how many of you have gone the recommended six months without washing? The reason I ask is that I received two pairs (Japan Midnight Indigo and Heavy Americans) a few weeks ago and am wondering how long I can hold out before washing. Anyone last, say, two months and still get decent fading results? The JMI's are indeed very dark blue and were also very wearable right out of the bag, but the HM's are burly buggers that I'm wearing mostly around the house until the weather cools down a bit more. Do two months of daily wear around the house equal four months of out and about?

Handymike, I think I understand your last comment: these two deals closed the day before SJC's September offer. I still curse the Fates. Anyway, the wife just asked me what I want for Christmas, which is a bit like asking Genghis Khan if he'd be interested in a small piece of real estate. I could break the bank on SJC's stuff alone before I even moved just north of the border.

The Brakeman jeans will be arriving this week. Should be here for when I get back from Arizona. As far as washing goes, I got to four months and caved. Couldn't be bothered - the fades have come through anyway, just taken a little longer.

I soak my denim before I wear it and then go months without even thinking about it. I don't wear them everyday though. I'd bet it was ~9mo on my 1st pair from Gustin but that was occasional wear (basically nights, weekends, and vacation pending weather). In 9mo I probably put the equivalent of 4-5mo worth of regular wear on them. Frankly, the only reason I washed them at that point was the thighs were covered in drywall dust.

Anyway, I don't think you should worry about it too much. Turn them inside out and wash with woolite dark every couple months. In my experience it's more about the wear and the denim itself than it is the washing schedule
