P. & C. Habig Wien Velour, size 57cm but fits perfect, hat store was in Riga. This one was missing the liner and ribbon so had it restored by Optimo. It's definitely pre 1940 and could actually be from around WWI. This is the first pre 1940 soft felt P. & C. Habig Wien that I have encountered. Majors props go to Josh for the tip.

:faint2::jaw: WHOA!! It honestly doesn't get any better than that, Steve!! I'm so glad that one came out as well as it did. That Velour is absolutely STUNNING!! I really think the blue ribbon goes extremely well with the black velour felt. I also really like the high flange on the brims end. It makes it look stunning when snapped, or left up-brim. :eusa_clap:eusa_clap:eusa_clap:eusa_clap

Robert, thanks for post the photo. Yes indeed. They wear it very high.

Josh, thanks for the kind words. I really appreciate them.
I enjoy both. The Mayser has a untypical shape. I have never seen it from Mayser before.. Looks a bit like a Homburger. The Melone is a light weight Version. Weight 70 gramms.

Steve, great photo, the shape looks like your Hat have

This text was Translated by Google. It say, that Wilkes Son produced Hats after WWK 2.
http://der-lausitzer.de/2011/10/29/guben-fabrikanlagen-von-c-g-wilke/

Plight of the Wilke-factory / readers have no solution for the location of the photographer
Obviously, today hardly imagine a Guben, as the factory of Carl Gottlob Wilke Gubener hat manufacturers were located in the city. After all, the view is from the year 1867, thus no living Gubener the buildings is so memorable. Bärbel Koschack described its research on the telephone: "This time is to guess a picture that from 1867 the view of the hat factory CG Wilke Road in the gas shows. The photographer or artist has been in the Straupitzstraße, approximately where today the GuWo has its headquarters.
Carl Gottlob Wilke, born 1796 in Forest, had come as a journeyman in 1822 and soon went to Guben from his master's certificate. He then founded a Hutmacherwerkstatt in the King Street and made various fashionable hats, until he became the inventor of the decimal formatted Wollhutes. This tissue was allowed to enter to be prevented by treatment with water vapor to later shrinkage. In 1859 already 100 people were employed by him, and the existing rooms were too small. Just bought CG Wilke, the area in the gas line to accommodate the growing hat production. The logo (in photo) called CG Wilke yet, but his son Frederick took over this work in 1860 and thus established the first German hat factory. In 1928 the company had 1000 employees. The Hat Factory has been extended and modernized. It was after the 2nd World War II to a large company, who had to live on the old tradition of hat production. He exported hats in the world until the decline after the turn. In the picture on the left of the tower can be seen that in a little different form today is the stairway to the City Hall, a 150 year old building. In Guben home Letter 2/1999, read what Winfried has written about the history of Kabisch Gubener hat industry still interesting. "
By the way, Carl Gottlob Wilke was the last master of the Hatters' Guild. With his invention of the waterproof felt hat he has Guben made known beyond national boundaries and caused so with the urban rich.

Manfred, My Melone is from Guben and is definitely pre WWII. I don't see where it says Wilke operated out of Guben post WWII. They may mean VEB Vereinigte Hutwerke Guben and what was left of that after unification. I am pretty sure some West German company used the Wilke name after WWII (see your recently found hat and your 1970s one).

The following two links describe pre and post WWII hat production in Guben.

Steve, I see this text is more specific and has more details.
1948 was the dismantling and 1952 the new VEB.
It could be, that VEB, produced Wilke Hats after 1952 - 1989.
It's only a guess.

This is a German Text, very interesting.

For the time being the last performance of "Huticals," a musical about the Gubener hatter, which is closely connected with the family Wilke, a member of the family sat in the front row: the great-granddaughter of Frederick Wilke, Christine Wolf.
"My mother had such dark eyes as the girl on the stage" Christine Wolf, the great-granddaughter of Frederick Wilke, Wilke Gubener in pencil. Photo: Photo: Photo-Werner

Told in the performance of Friedrich Wilke, the grandfather of Christine Wolf's mother, Elizabeth, the story of the wool hat and the founding of Guben hat industry. Married Elisabeth Wilke 1922 Gubener cloth manufacturer Erich Wolf, and in December 1926, whose daughter Christine was born.

Liked in the birthplace
Gladly accepted this invitation to musical performances and to participate in the 100th Th anniversary of the Church Of The Good Shepherd at. Impressed by the acting performance of young actors, said Christine Wolf: "I could imagine my mother well. She also had such dark eyes as the girl on stage. "
Christine Wolf remembers that they deal in the House of Wilkes, right next to the hat factory in the gas train, and stayed at the church at the rear of the property in the Straupitzstraße. There she was baptized and confirmed.
Growing up on Deulowitzer Lake, the summer residence of the Wolf family, moved into the newly built later Christine Wolfsche villa on the lake Bornstraße.
Her father, Erich Wolf, was able to win the famous architect Mies van der Rohe for the design of his house. The estate belonged to a large garden on a slope to the green lawn with beds of asparagus, strawberries, fruit trees and roses. The view presented to the Neisse before the island theater.
Erich's father was very interested in art, collecting porcelain and paintings. Well cared for Christine and her siblings spent childhood and youth in the villa on the lake Bornstraße. "Our gardener Cuba always took for fresh vegetables and flowers in the summer from the garden on a hillside in winter in the greenhouse," recalls the now 76-year-old.
The holiday she spent with her siblings often in Ambach on Lake Starnberg. Each year, one could take the children one or two friends. One of her brothers was baptized in 1936 at the name of idols, something unconventional, but thought the father Erich Wolf as a political statement against the then emerging Nazism. Christine Wolf was a 18-year-old assistant and Red Cross in mid-February 1945 with her parents on the flight. "My father had reluctantly decided, in the hope of returning soon. Each with three items of clothing and pulled on each other with a suitcase, we left our property by a small garden gate on a slope in the direction of Green Meadow. My mother had put all of us part of the family jewels in a neck pouch. Everything else was left behind, even in lighted display cases housed, Porzellänchen ', as my father called his collection lovingly. It was supposed to be only for a short time. "Took almost a week to escape over Cottbus, Halle and Munich on Lake Starnberg.
"My father is increasingly desperate. He could not imagine not being able to go back, and my mother tried to comfort him, "said Christine Wolf recalls the hard times. They even came as a Red Cross volunteer in a hospital under, where little later former inmates were housed, the Christine Wolf used. "It was pathetic figures with serious illnesses," she describes are still affected. There followed a tough year in agriculture, with stable and field work. "But at least there was plenty to eat," recalls Christine Wolf.
Her parents, Eric and Elizabeth Wolf, were now moved to the Rhineland and relatives had found her daughter for a training opportunity for the infant and pediatric nurse. And with the sale of the name Wilke-hats at a company that wanted to take this world-famous brand further, it was the family financially somewhat better.
Shortly before his 75th Birthday Erich Wolf died in 1958. Goetz son took care of the sale of hats and a descendant of the hat manufacturers Gubener Wilke also successful.

The brother of Goetz and Christine Wolf, William, came in with a relative named asleep in Montevideo, learned Spanish and continued with the purchase of wool for a company in Essen, the family tradition.
The connection to the Wolf family home Gubener never stopped. Most of them were, however, contacts with former employees, including the former administrator of the summer residence of the family at the lake Deulowitzer. Many ran for cover addresses.

Meeting with friends
After the fall of Christine Wolf came back even after Guben. In connection with the former possessions regulations were to be taken. This was also the "Seehof". Then there were meetings with friends and acquaintances, including August and Wilhelm Wilke. Together we visited the only summer residence of the family at the lake Deulowitzer.
"It almost everything has remained so, as I still know from my childhood," says Christine Wolf. Sadly it is only about the poor condition of the grave of her grandparents, Joseph and Louisa Wilke, and her uncle Siegfried.
She remembers also that she has often sung in the Church Of The Good Shepherd, and congratulates her siblings, together with the superior of the monastery Wilke, Elizabeth Berndt, a birthday with a song and recited poems.
The invitation to the anniversary pin and the performance of the play Wilke took over the family of Christine Wolf was happy and enthusiastic that you have been brought closer to the way their ancestors. "I am happy and grateful to have had such ancestors, and that my mother was socially engaged way," said Christine Wolf. And she touched a ring on her left hand, which her mother once put her in the neck pouch.

It would be interesting to find what West German company bought the brand.

Thanks, Steve. Thats a interesting story too.

One, two, three - my hat

To a certain extent by the wayside was the ABM project "Construction of tourist cooperation Guben-Gubin" in Guben employment and rehabilitation society (ESR) found mbH these days speak of a sensation: an almost new-looking original Wilkehut from production before 1945.
The logo on the hat is the warranty: This felt hat is from the Wilke's hat factory dating from before 1945. Angelika Drewitz has bought it on the Internet. Photo: PHOTO Werner
The two women ABM Angelika Drewitz, a skilled master of Textile Technology, and Kerstin squire, a trained banker, are involved in the development of tourist guidance system for Guben and Gubin. Her research for the design of information spaces and points in the city, they perform well on the Internet. "On 16 October, I entered just once the term Wilkehut 'in the search engine. And suddenly there was offered on Ebay a Wilkehut, "says Angelika Drewitz. Because otherwise it with Internet does not care much, she has called her son Marco. "I made him sharp, and charged him with the persecution of the auction," says Angelika Drewitz. The 27-year-old banker in the near Lüneburg, and thus by a specialist in financial transactions. As at 21 October increased the daily stress. "The last half hour I've e mitgebibbert" Angelica admits Drewitz. And then it was clear: She had bought the more than 60 years old Filzgut. For as much as 1.99 euros, plus the much more expensive postage. "I was mad das. I started to tremble," admits the Gubenerin that even ten years working in the local Hutbetrieben. And she thought: "could obviously start with the description on the Internet no one really something." The age of the hat have not been here, only that there was no longer operating and that he was a few years old already.
"I've also thought that the hat has certainly been a few moth holes," says Angelika Drewitz, "But he looks almost like new, with no moth holes."

A customer in Westphalia
But in his historical importance is no doubt: The logo of the hat factory CG Wilke with the founding of the company date from 1822 and the customer Low William Versmold speak for its authenticity. Slight traces of the one found in the Hutfutter Carried. The graying felt hat has a leather sweat band, a plastic insert with air holes ("something we have not even made)", a zero denotes the hat size. The band set with spring has the same quality as the border of the quilt Hutrandes.
But what is to become the precious hat, do not Angelika Drewitz. The City and Industrial Museum had invaded her. But when they learned of the local Hutprobierstation, they shrank from it. Such old hat would suffer greatly if they would ever be touched with sweaty fingers and placed on the head, says the learned master of Textile Technology. But it would examine whether the pin Wilke, an exhibition of the hat was possible. No way he should disappear in a private household or sold.
Gottfried Hain, Managing Wilke in pin would be happy in his own words, when such a rare example of how the original Wilke-felt hat came into the pen. He could imagine that a good opportunity to show the hat, the 100th Death of Carl Friedrich Gottlob Wilke son would be next year. Frederick died on 21 October 1908.

From Erblass in Dresden
And until then, or sooner, could perhaps be something to find out the hat itself. Dresdner eBay traders Köckritz Samir, who sent the Hutpaket to Guben, recalled in RUNDSCHAU demand that the alert came from an estate. Whether the woman who brought the hat to him, logs, and can perhaps tell something is still unclear.
Dresdner eBay traders themselves knew it in Guben times after the turn of the hat industry was a technical museum.

Manfred, Thanks for additional article! I do not believe the hat they found (see below) is an original Wilke from Guben. I would say late 50s early 1960s (probably produced by the West German company that bought the Wilke brand name).
