Echter Borsilino "Qualità Superiore", French Point 5 1/2, possibly late 1930s early 1940s. Unfortunately the Borsalino Paper Label is missing but the separate Size Stamp is present. The Felt Finish is similar to Velour Soleil so shows a high amount of gloss and is very pliable so easily dry creases. There is a mix of colors (you can see better in the Open Crown photos) that from a distance looks Stone Gray like. The Form and Dimensions fit the time period and place. This is a great start to 2021.

A great start indeed Steve! Can't really ask for more in an early velour - it really is a shame the Borsalino paper tag is missing (not that it detracts from the hat in the slightest). For clarity, are you saying this was made in Italy for the German market - or would Borsalino have factories/sources in Germany/Austria and Czechoslovakia?

Wayne, Thank you! I wish it had the Paper Label especially since it's a Specialty Finish. All Echter Borsalino Hats were made at Borsalino Giuseppe & Fratello, Alessandria, Italy but tailored to the German Market of the time.

Sadly not mine as I was unsuccessful in my bidding. Photos are the sellers, a rather special pre-war Huckel Sigma exported to the Japanese market. I recall Steve shared some photos of a 1928 exhibition in Tokyo. Wayne, Fantastic! I am sorry you didn't win it. A long while ago I came across a couple JHS Japanese market Stiff Felts and Soft Felts but tiny sizes. What was the size of this one? Thanks for saving the photos. It's a superb! Also the carton is really interesting / great.

Hats intended for other markets are particularly interesting to me. To add salt to the wound the Sigma was a 57/58cm... But fret not, I'm in the process of sourcing a Platin and Jota - fingers crossed! (at least Im fairly sure, the seller photo are a bit blurry).

Wayne, That is too bad but I hope you can win the Platin and Jota. The Platin is an especially interesting + fantastic finish.

By way can you make out this stamp? I don't believe it's hat related but it might help with dating. Also can see the tight Center Creases and Side Dents from that time period.

Stefan, Thank you! Yes it's too bad the Paper Label is missing. The color could be Gris. I would have to check some examples. I am not sure I have encountered a Gloss finish from this time period but I could be wrong.

It's not common that I find hats like this in my local hunting ground, so I couldn't skip that one, even if it's not my size.

Imported in Norway and sold by the outlet store of the oldest hattefabrikk of Scandinavia, established in 1858. The store opened in the end of 1890s and this logo started to be used since 1937. At this time at least 3 more stores of the brand were running, 2 in Oslo and 1 within an hour driving.

I couldn't find store pics but that's the building it was located in 1909. Number 23 should be under the balcony in the middle of the building.

What a hat! I love the ribbon work:
Great hybrid variant between shark grill and "normal" bow.
I'm sure someone will be happy about that one! ;)

Echter Borsalino "Qualità Superiore" "Amiata" "C. Nero" "Gorasti", Size Tag Missing / measures 58cm, possibly late 1930s. This is the first hat of a 9 hat find that took 2 1/2 months to arrive from Germany. The Smooth Finish Felt is of a lighter weight and easily dry creases. There is non elastic Wind Cord which is the type you find in this time period and prior. The gray sweatband has a specialty finish I do not believe I have encountered before. This hat was most likely sold in Eger / Cheb Czechoslovakia (prior to WWI Austria Hungary).
