Wow, I like that Peschel! The taper is quite modern-looking, I think.

In general there was a movement in that direction (taper and less crown height) during the time period (late 50s early 60s). Also this Peschel has some Alpen influence.

Interesting! My maternal grandfather had a similar hat, a black Wegener fedora, with a braided felt hat band, and a tapered crown, as I remember it. Definitely not an Alpine hat, but very much a sportier hat and perhaps influenced in the same manner. I'll post pictures when I'm home for the holidays.

This thread has quickly become one of my favorites - some lovely hats in here. That charcoal Fränkel fedora is especially handsome. Something about it really appeals to me.

Looking forward to seeing the Wegener.

Yes that Fraenkel is nice. It is actually a very dark green.

The 1952 Habig Camber in post #82 is another one of those hats that just grabs the eye!

That is one of my favorites too. Not many P&C Habig fedoras available from that time period.

Habig Murau Velour

Habig Murau Velour, size 59cm. Not sure why the outside paper label has 58cm? / 7 3/8. This one was made in 1973 but still of very high quality.

This hat can be dated between 1951-57 since Stanley W. Unger left the Palmer House Hotel at the end of 1950 to move to the Bismarck Hotel Lobby as well as in the Chicago Board of Trade Building. The Bismarck Hotel Store had a "Going Out of Business Sale" Jan.-Mar. of 1958. He retired a few years later and had an additional store in Evanston less than a mile from where I now live. The wide double-thickness brim edge has no stitching so is either felted or a glued overwelt and its 1-7/8" wide. The crown dips to 4-1/4" at the front and rises to 5". The sweatband has the accordion-pleated front ventilation. Super-soft plush felt. In great condition except for a case of "ring around the collar".

I am really happy you ended up scoring this one. Looks like it was never worn. The velour (color and finish) is fantastic! I wonder if the ring can some how be worked out? Beautifully made hat! :eusa_clap :eusa_clap :eusa_clap :eusa_clap

My grandfather's Wegener

As promised, my grandfather's Wegener. On closer inspection, it appears to be a very very dark blue, rather than black. It's a 58cm, so one size too big for me, but given the condition, I'm considering sending it out for cleaning and re-blocking to my size. It was originally bought at Ahlens, a department store in Stockholm. Anyone have any idea about the approximate date or likely composition? Judging by the liner, looks newer than Mario's '66.

BigBjorn, Thank you for posting the pictures. I am thinking 1970s. I assume the liner is glued in. It is definitely a rabbit / hare fur felt. Looks like it could have a velour finish. A steam and brush would bring it back to life. I would just add a couple of spacers since it is only one size off. I don't think it needs to be sent in for a clean and block.

Mayserwegener, thanks for the reply. I can confirm that it's velour finish and that the liner is, in fact, glued in. I steamed and brushed the hat yesterday, and you were right - looks great now. It still needs a touch more steam on the rear, as the brim curves slightly off-center, but it's good enough that I wore it to the office today, and now it's hanging on a hook beside my desk.

Mayser for my husband

This Mayser arrived today:

It's actually a little lighter than charcoal - a dark medium gray.

The felt reminds me of some of my old Borsalinos - malleable, but substantial.

2 5/8" brim, 5 1/2" uncreased crown, 2 1/8" reeded sweat, 7/8" ribbon.

It fits him well and he looks very handsome wearing it! I'll get a picture in the next day or two.
