Kelly's Directory of merchants, manufacturers and shippers of the world : a guide to the export and import, shipping and manufacturing industries, Volume 2, Europe 1964
I went to the Library of Congress in Washington, DC. I took photos of Kelley's directories for the following years: 1915, 1925, 1963 and 1964. It's going to take some time to post everything. The ones from 1915 and 1925 have a lot of hat companies listed. I focused on Germany, Austria (Czech in 1925) and Italy.
I will try to request one from that time period. Also the late 40s and mid 50s. I will post the 1915 and 1925 photos / info shortly.
The Library of Congress also had copies of the "The Hatter's Gazette" up to 1911. This was the English hat trade publication similar to "The American Hatter". The English hat companies were extremely conservative which is not unexpected. Not many soft felt hats and no mention of Velour finishes (or other specialty finishes) which were popular (Germany, Austria, America) at that time period. Also there was mention of the "Homburg" style hat which verifies the term was used England at that time period.
