As I see it, the hat is entirely in its original state. The Sweatband seems in good condition, but as so often the cotton threads of the machine sewing didn't make it over time. This one needs a restauration. What bothers me most is the deteriorated state of the glued in label, which I think is gold printed on black silk. It seems complete but the silk is splitting. I have to decide to glue it back in place and cover it with a acrylic protection foil or to remove it completely for conservation and store it on neutral paper... and maybe applicate a color-copy inside the hat. Yes, I confess, I'd like to wear this hat :) . Philosophic considerations on this are very welcome. No some gossip of the past: The label unveils the hat was made for a french customer/seller. Those were by way the most difficult clients, due to their extremely high quality expectations. Thats what the quality Manager of Borsalino told me 15 years ago. He was in the company from 1948 to the early 80's. He passed away some years ago. He told me that if a batch of hats differed in hight or other dimensions of even only a few millimeters, the french clients used to sent the whole batch back. Nobody was a picky as those clients. He then used also some unpleasent terms for them I wont repeat in this well educated place.

Dear Gentlemen,
after looking for years for original "fu Lazzaro" hat, two days ago I was so lucky to stumble over a nice brown Fedora I would like to share with you. It was on etsy and I know there were a few others interested in it. I hope I didn't "steal" it to anybody of you fellow loungers. If so, please accept my apologises.
I am going to list the pictures of the auction as right now it has not yet arrived here in Alessandria.
How cool. Look forward to seeing more after you receive it. Congratulations

That is a nice find and absolutely worth saving. It will take some serious work though. Especially the unreeded sweatband will take some black belt skills. I wouldn't do too much with the crown patch though, other than glue it back in the places where it came loose. Should be perfectly wearable then.

Wow! What a great hat! These are not so easy to find, especially in this color.

Definitely wear it!

Good to see you found an original. It looks fantastic. Your lucky the Crown Tip Patch survived. Often times they are missing from old hats.

Thanks to all of you for the nice words. Once it will arrive I will send some pics in order to better understand the colour. From inside it seems almost grey. Need to be fotographed in daylight. I will do my best. For the restauration I will follow the advises from this forum and make it wearable with the logo reglued in place. The sweatband is less a problem for me as I did a lot of restauration on textiles and hats in the past. The leather seems still supple and in good condition. I will keep you informed.

Gentlemen,
this very nice fuLazzaro Bowler in a bigger Size (6 1/2)is actually on ebay:
Seems it was delivered to Palermo and never left that place. Until now !
I offered 150 Euro via ebay and was ignored. As its not my size I will not go further.
Good luck !

Whew. It’s fairly rare that a derby/bowler sells for more than $100.

I was pretty sure I had posted this gem somewhere, maybe it was on the eBay thread. I think so, because some folks wondered how they had missed it, but I made it a sub-5 minute BIN. If I recall correctly I think I got it for $25; if my number is off, it was certainly less than $100 and I was moving fast!

The liner is suffering, but it was sold by Wolff Brothers in Kansas City. The eBay seller was from Texas.

A very sweet black early fu Lazzaro.

Thanks for posting it, Daniel. It is really a beauty! Love the bow. Does it have a felted edge or an overwelt? I think that's the first fuzzy Fu Lazzaro I see "in the flesh" and one of the very few pre-war Italian with longer nap finishes-two or three that I can confidently recall. Good to see they are still out there, it's hats like this that pique my interest.

Excellent find. They are rare, so it's nice to see one pop up from time to time. Pity about the liner, but what can you do?

Daniel, Thank you for posting the photos. Would it be possible to post a close up photo of the paper label?

I have not seen many or these G.B Borsalino's. This is a Alessandria / GHIAGOIU(?) 40's - 50's ??? Excellent felt feels like soft butter. Not sure what the borso color tag is but appears as medium golden tan. Wish it fit my size 59 head better. ;)

Good to see you around these parts, Ken. It’s a great hat and in a great size. I think I’d find a way to make that hat fit if I were you.
