August Belmont Jr.(r) with Paul Cravath.
"August Belmont
(February 18, 1853 – December 10, 1924) was an American financier. He financed the construction of the original New York subway (1900-1904) and for many years headed the Interborough Rapid Transit Co., which ran the transit system. He also financed and led the construction of the Cape Cod Canal in Massachusetts, which opened in 1914. Belmont bought the land for and built New York's Belmont Park racetrack—named for his father—and was a major owner/breeder of thoroughbred racehorses. He served as chairman of the board of the Louisville and Nashville Railroad. He also served as a director of the Southern Pacific Co., parent of the railroad, and National Park Bank."

Um. The supposed "Founder of the Belmont Stakes" was apparently just wearing long pants when the first contest was run in 1867. I should have been more specific in my post, I guess.

Um. The first Belmont Stakes was held at Jerome Park Racetrack in The Bronx, built in 1866 by stock market speculator Leonard Jerome (1817–1891) and financed by August Belmont Sr. (1816–1890), for whom the race was named.

From Wikipedia:
William Desmond Taylor (born William Cunningham Deane-Tanner; 26 April 1872 – 1 February 1922) was an Anglo-Irish-American director and actor. A popular figure in the growing Hollywood motion picture colony of the 1910s and early 1920s, he directed 59 silent films between 1914 and 1922 and acted in 27 between 1913 and 1915.[1]

Taylor's murder on 1 February 1922, along with other Hollywood scandals, such as the Roscoe Arbuckle trial, led to a frenzy of sensationalist and often fabricated newspaper reports.[2] The murder remains an official cold case.[3]
