I preffer a butane lighter for cigars, the lighter fluid from a zippo seems to taint the cigar.

For pipes, wasn't there a different design specific to pipes for a better position of the flame for lighting?

Now if you want some interesting cigarettes go check out the ones offered by Nat Sherman http://www.natsherman.com
Butane all the way, no matter what you're smoking :cool2: Yes, there are butane lighters commonly available which have the "spout" at an angle, perfect for a pipe.

I've never been a lifer when it comes to smoking, though I was smoking (and drinking %-) heavily after my ex-wife left. Back to no cigarettes and feeling much better about life in general (I do think there's a correlation, though there's a whole hell of a lot more to feeling better than no cigs...). I must agree with you that Sherman's are the ultimate "cool" smokes. When I bought them, I bought the Cigaretellos, queen size (extra long) and dark-brown paper. They look so cool and beyond retro. And they're good smokes. And they say Fifth Ave New York on the box. Not much more to ask for, if you ask me.

I"m a cigar smoker, there are now inserts that go inside the lighter. Thus you can convert a standard Zippo into a bona fide cigar lighter. I don't have either, yet, but I have friends who use these and love them. They're called Z-Plus by a comapany called Blazer. It turns the Zippo into a torch, and uses butane. But you can still flip the Zippo open and slap it shut which is half the fun, right?

I had to stop using my Zippo ( a 1932 replica) because for some reason the taste of petrol was starting to make me feel ill. Switching to butane cleared it up in an instant, but I still miss it.

These days I have a torch lighter for everyday use, and for dress I use a Laguiole lighter that looks beautifully vintage. The Laguiole goes perfectly with my cigarette holders (which tend to come out for more formal occasions). I shall have to investigate the Z-Blazer, since that sounds rather fun.

As to Zippos and pipes: I remember about 15 years ago when I was wandering over moors, one of the nice gentlemen teaching us to come back without the assistance of helicopter or ambulance had a Zippo specifically designed for pipe smokers. If I recall correctly, it had larger holes to the sides and punched airholes over the top, so that it worked properly when turned on its side.

Black Crackle Zippos

Hello friends,
I just picked up a Japanese repro black crackle Zippo Windproof Lighter. It should be here within a week. From the pictures, though, it looks like the Japanese have once again paid attention to every single individual detail, even down to the packaging.

Anybody else have black crackle Zippos from 1942-1945, repro or real deal?
