Yes, it is funny that we are looking for a tapered felt hat that is stiff.

And truly the stingiest of brims! :p It's the antithesis of a fedora, or is that an anti-fedora?

bah, I can't remember how to post pix in a post!!

While filming this scene for a spy film, a van load of Arab dudes drove up to us, unaware we were filing from across the street, and spoke to us in Arabic all friendly like. We had no idea what they were saying of course.

The turban and dishdasha are completely authentic, though. A buddy got me three sets while stationed in the United Arab Emirates.

I do wear my fez with a vintage smokeing jacket while drinking martinis at house parties though. Sorry, no pix of that.

When I was in Egypt last year I saw many Fez's worn by wealthy businessmen and bazaar stall owners. They were made of felt and appeared to be quite stiff. They were very flat on the top but still had slightly rounded angles where the top joined the sides. The only Fez's I saw that had sharp edges (like the one in the poster) were the el cheapo ones. These are sold 'everywhere' in Egypt and they are basically red felt stuck over a cone of black cardboard - crappola. It was very difficult to find a genuine Fez and you had to go to out of the way mens tailors to get one.

Exactly! that's my experience in Morocco too- most of the cheap souvenir ones are the thinner, more squared ones.
But apparently, that style is what is wanted here. The nicer quality ones seem to be the thicker, more rouned ones formed from the felt rather than stuck to a rigid shaper. Most of the ones available on the 'net however, seem destined for Halloween.
