Harv, my wife's family has one of these boneyards as well. Didn't take a pic of my hat when I was last there though.

40's-60's mostly good for just parts but there are a few in the barns that are better. Great hat by the way!

It was a gorgeous 72°f (22c) here today, so I met up with my wife and kids at the local botanical gardens after work for a stroll through the Japanese garden.

There were some massive koi in that pond. Many well over 2 feet long, waaaay bigger than the ones in my little pond.
I had hoped to see the bonsais in their fall foliage but they had already been moved inside for winter.
Sorry no hat pic, I'll spare you the dirty ball cap, as I had come straight from work.
I'll try to get back in spring and post pics of the cherry blossoms.

(Moderators, pls feel free to remove this post for being OT as it's got baseball caps and garrison caps but no fedoras. But the "afield" part is on topic I think!)

I am in Hawaii, mostly to see the Pearl Harbor ceremony on December 7th. Today, the 5th, I took a military base tour that focuses on places and bases affected in the bombing raid of December 7th, 1941.

On the tour today was a Pearl Harbor Survivor, Bob Berg. He was assigned as a boilerman on the U.S.S. Tennessee. That Sunday morning, he was working on another ship which wasn't hit. I'm standing next to him on the Arizona Memorial.

Later, the tour took us to the Schofield Army Barracks, which was attacked by Japanese gunfire and bombs on Sunday morning. The scene was grippingly filmed in "From Here to Eternity" (1953).

In this scene, a Japanese plane is visible in the background, about to swoop into the barracks area (Quandrangle C), strafing people and buildings. A soldier is visible in the middle of the photo, running towards the mess hall, yelling to warn everyone about the plane he hears above him. He's about to get shot down.

Here I am in Quadrangle C in the same location, the same tree in the left side of the photo (larger because it's sixty years older). I'm with my buddy Jerry, who has been on the tour each December 7th for 19 years. This is my 6th year. They aren't running on the 7th this year, so we came today.

James Jones's "From Here to Eternity" was followed by "The Thin Red Line", and then by "Whistle." They form a WWII trilogy of the old army and the beginning of the war, then the war itself ( the battle for Guadalcanal), and finally of the returning veterans. Really absorbing reading.

Our tour guide is a WWII. historian and said that James Jones' barracks at Schofield were 50 feet from where the Quadrangle C photos were taken. Jones was in D.

Today we went to the Pearl Harbor Commemoration ceremony. There were survivors in attendance from Dec. 7th, 1941.

At 7:48am there was a flyover and a naval salute, in memory of when the attack began.

It's a WWII bar, museum, and military tour company.
