I have played music in the one horse town of Burke more times now than I ever would have imagined, and now it’s starting to feel like a second home.

Back to Burke with my Buckaroo Bowler.

Mike and I got to meet the guys at The Man's Hat Shop in Albuquerque today.
Mike, Bill Sisk, me and JW Brown.
Owner Stuart Dunlap was not in while we were there. We had a great time talking hats with them and hopefully they plan to come by the hat shop in Covington soon!

I have a little time so I hope to add to my trip out to the South West.

Evangelo's Cocktail Lounge on San Francisco Street Santa Fe. I got to meet and visit with Evangelo. [The film CRAZY HEART with Jeff Bridges was filmed here] a great character!

I enjoyed talking with Bill Sisk from The Man's Hat Shop in Albuquerque. He told me that the original hat for Breaking Bad came from their shop. It was a Stetson Saxon that had a ''pork pie" crease!

I saw more fedora style hats than the western style hat... I was really surprised! [just one random shot I made]

Straw cowboy hat afield. Took a little drive up old U.S. 11 into northeast Alabama to the Little River Canyon nature preserve and DeSoto Falls. The theatre and old store were in the little town of Collinsville. We passed through there on the way. The dinosaur and giant robot were in Ft. Payne.

My work takes me into Yosemite National Park on an almost weekly basis. Today I bought a change of clothes and after my meeting I spent a couple of hours waking around. I’ve been coming to Yosemite for decades, but it still takes my breath away. It’s one of those places that actually lives up to the hype; just too many people most of the time.

Thanks for sharing the pics Rusty! They're getting me stoked for my vacation to Santa Fe (and surrounding area) that is coming up soon. We try and go once or twice a year. My wife's best friend's family has Tia Sofia's Café just down the street from Evangelo's. Best breakfast burritos around.

Did you stop in at O'Farrell's while you were in the neighborhood?

Fair warning: this will be long & about alcoholic beverages. If you find either to be offensive, you might want to skip.

I went on a Kentucky Bourbon Trail Tour this past weekend to Bardstown, Lebanon & Harrodsburg, KY. To be honest I didn't take many pictures as I had Bourbon on my mind & at each stop there just too many drinks to enjoy, too much swag to look at, not enough time...& too many people! It was impossible to take a pic without the background filled with people. So I'm using some of their promotional & publicity pictures in this review.

Knowing it was going to be a hot day I wore a Stetson hemp OR. In our tour group the only other good hat was an older Stetson Rancher in a brick crease. We both received compliments from others on the tour about our hats, with references back to LBJ. I saw several well worn fedoras in Bardstown that were artificially distressed & creased to honor their hillbilly moonshiner history. Anticipating some Bourbon purchases I also took along a padded backpack & some food & bottled water. Designed for camera gear it worked great protecting glass bottles!

Bardstown has their annual Bourbon fest coming up Sept 12 - 16th this yr. One of the Master Distillers said if you're serious about your Bourbon & want to learn, then come any time yr around...but not on weekends & particularly that weekend! Come to the fest early in the wk.

Reporting in no particular order, in Bardstown we toured Jim Beam's American Stillhouse where they distill Jim Beam & the newer flavored bourbons like JB Honey, Vanilla, etc, plus Ghost; plus their Knob Creek Bourbon line, Red Stag, Devil’s Cut, Booker’s, & Basil Hayden. This was the only Distillery where I took the mashbill tour which left little time in the tasting room. Got some free Knob Creek swag.

Charring new oak casks before first fill:

IMG_7253.JPG

The Heaven Hill Distillery brands are Elijah Craig, Evan Williams, Old Fitzgerald, & HENRY MCKENNA Single Barrel. HENRY MCKENNA was new to me & I enjoyed some in their tasting room.

The Luxco Distillery is brand new. They are now distilling their line of Ezra Brooks and Rebel Yell bourbons inhouse. In the past I didn't rate Rebel Yell very high so it was always just off my personal radar. After sampling their Single Barrel (100 proof) & their Small Batch Reserve (90.6 proof) I bought one bottle of each, & received some free swag.

Last stop in Bardstown was the Kentucky Bourbon Marketplace which was our last chance to wet our whistles or buy swag & other souvenirs before leaving. I took a second crack at some HENRY MCKENNA Single Barrel neat.

IMG_7243.JPG

First stop in Lebanon was the Limestone Branch Distillery. Their brands are the Yellowstone Bourbons & Minor Case Rye Whiskey. There is/was some connection to the Beam family but I don't recall now what it is.

The Maker's Mark Distillery was in Lebanon & on the tour also.

In Harrodsburg is the Old Towne Distillery where they distill Chaplin Hills Moonshine featuring Shine distilled with grain from hemp seed added to the corn. It is crystal clear but has a bit of a nuttiness & smoke imparted from the hemp seed; I liked it a lot. They also distill Apple pie, watermelon & other flavored Shine; Elkhorn Bourbon, some vodka & rum. I bought four bottles of the hemp Shine.

IMG_7237.JPG

My friends always turn their noses up at Shine but they always come around when they want a taste:

The guy with the Stetson Rancher had been on a Tennessee Whiskey tour & spoke highly of the George Dickel Distillery. I'll be looking into a TN Whiskey Tour soon!

I arrived back at the hotel with a full backpack & a happy man! The best Father's Day gift a man could have!

Whew whoo Jack:
Makes my liver quiver just thinking bout that tour. I’d a been right there with you, 15 years ago. Ha
One regret i had quiting was i never got around to trying shine and that was living in WV. Guess i’m not a very good Mountaineer. Hemp seed in shine?? Go figure...i remember “other stuff” in hemp!!
Good write up. Glad you had a Happy Pappy Day!!

That shine sure looks good, and that line up! With an educated palate for whiskey, it was probably a lot of fun but also educational. Glad you got to take that tour! Will be awaiting more reviews on the shine!
