Fedora Color suggestions

I'm about to buy my first fedora, I've finally found one I like that's in my price range. But I was just wondering, what color do you suggest?
My two options are grey or brown. I don't want to get black since that looks to formal to me.

Thanks for your help!

You will find that most hat wearers around here recommend grey as a versatile first hat. At the end of the day, it's really up to you. Go with a color that you want to wear.

That makes a man wonder.
I've always worn grey hats...perhaps I should try a gray one for a chance?

That is my problem too. I want to get another hat. I have a dark green called Loden. I think black is too morose, esp with my black overcoat or leather coat. My wife votes for grey, she feels that the brown looks too Indiana Jones. I do like the dark earthy browns but can see how it may not go with some of the things I wear...

Decisions, decisions...buy both?

Pick one and whatever color you choose, get the other color next. You'll need both.

Disregard the warnings about brown hats looking too "Indiana Jones". Lots of men wore brown hats before Dr. Henry Jones came along. Besides, Indy's hat is awesome---even apart from any association with some iconic film character and his hat.

Not to Worry

My experience has been that each successive hat has shown me more about what I am looking for in a hat. I would never have guessed in the beginning that today I would look forward to owning a midnight blue hat (when the money gathers). Each gray hat I bought (and still love) taught me to think about gray differently. So the color of your first hat matters tremendously but it is still only the first step on a little journey.

From what I've seen, brown was a very common hat colour. And it's only how you wear it that determines if you're gonna look like Indy.

If you wear it with a suit or bright clothing, then no.

If you wear it with brown trousers, tan shirt, brown waistcoat, open collar and a belt, or with a leather jacket...Yeah. Indy all the way, people will say.

It's just a matter of how you pull it off.

Gray...... unless you are planning on wearing it in the country, to the races or hunting/shooting/fishing, in which case I think that a blown hat is indicated--and should be a Trilby anyway in that case.
