Fedora at the Beach

Does anyone else think that a Fedora (or other fur hat) looks funny at the beach, even if the weather is cool?

I'm likely moving to Manley, and while over there just felt (no pun intended) a bit odd.

Same for Fedora and shorts. To me, if it's warm enough for shorts, it's warm enough for a Panama hat.

Regards,

I don't think I looked any funnier than usuallol lol lol I think when you are one of only a few wearing fedoras you can kind of rewrite some of the 'rules'

I believe that felts are fine anywhere and anytime. I often wear my tawny fawn Federation with Hawaiian style shirts and other classic beachwear. Warm beaches seem to just call for a straw hat but felt is universal. Just watch out for the wind!

I think the people in Manly will be more concerned with you learning how to spell the name of your new town than with your headwear.

wind is the big factor as mentioned above....I have often considered a stealthy chin strap as one solution

SteveN,

About three years ago the start of the Sydney-Hobart race was in brutal sun and there were several brimmed hats of various types among the Manly side spectators. Even my sister-in-law from nearby Clontarf wore a brown wide-brimmed felt fedora.

But I'm not quite that comfortable with year-round felt like some FLers so tend toward panamas or the Tilley in the beach environs.

Bill (who once unknowingly wore a Parramatta Eels look-alike rugby shirt and angered a Manly taxi driver)

If you're walking around in street clothes you're not "at the beach" as such. Now if it was 85, sunny and mild and you were in lounging your Speedo  and a fedora you'd be considered daft just about anywhere. In that case you'd want a straw.
