What fuels those, some sort of oil or coal? I'm completely unfamiliar with steam power in a car - and had no idea that it was an option that late!

The kübelwagen (translation "Bucketmobile") used the chassis of the original VW bug.

I know it has often been alleged (quite possibly proven by now) that the money a lot of people paid in for their People's Cars went instead to produce these for the war effort. There was at a time a joke about a guy who worked on the VW assembly line and had stolen a car bit by bit, smuggling it out a piece at a time. Built it in his garage at home. When he finished it, he discovered it was a tank.
