Tell me about it. I learned as a young sprat, so I used to think everyone could sew. It sure comes in handy when you lose a button, or need to hem your pants, or even make your own clothes when nothing in the stores is quite right :)

Oh wow... that must have been embarrassing! What a lucky break that someone could sew it :) Luckily my tear happened when I was trying it on at home.

It isn't feasible to wear them every day, unless you're okay with ruining them - and I am vehemently against that. I had one new silk shirt that had a separation right on a seam below the arm pit area, and due to it being a "herringbone" pattern, was afraid it would just pull apart even if it was sewn back together. I purchase some fabric glue and after sewing it, put a slight amount close to the edge of the repair area on the inside, and it has held for a long time now. I also tend to hand wash items like that to help keep them from being beat up in the washer machine.
