Courtesy of Shorpy, this is my new favorite photograph of all time. August, 1938.

Solidarity, kids. Go get 'em!

I believe that women have faced the same general problems and concerns when it comes to their clothing the past few hundred years as we face in the world today. If anything it has become easier to dress today than at any time in the history of women. The styles may have changed, and even some of the exact articles of clothing may have gone away or changed completely, but the reality is that it was just as challenging to these beautiful women as it is for us today. Thanks for the pictures and the post. I love to consider what it must have been like in those times as a woman.

Please forgive the close crop on this one. I've pestered my aunt to send me a copy the original scan (I lost it in a pc crash), but haven't heard back yet. This photo of my grandmother was taken sometime in the late 40s in Hawaii. She's in her early 20s here. In the original photo, you can see that she's impeccably dressed - until you notice her bare feet in the grass! The woman never did wear shoes if she could help it.

Now she must have been quite a character!

Meet Goldie Williams of Chicago, alias Meg Murphy. On January 29, 1898 Ms. Williams was arrested for vagrancy in Omaha, Nebraska. The police description listed her occupation as prostitute, 5 feet, 110 lbs and that her left finger had been broken at one time and there was a cut below her right wrist.

I adore the girl in the shirt and tie. I love this semi masculine look and works well with a fitted tweed jacket, pants, skirt or plus fours!
