Ever "Ike" a dress jacket?

I like your look, Mr. Bern.....

I tried something similar this winter with a grey turtleneck- made it look very '60's-ish.

The Ike jacket also looks pretty sharp with dark grey trousers, white shirt, plain black necktie and cordovan belt and shoes.

I used to have an old picture from Esquire Magazine that showed two gentlemen playing golf in Ike jackets and wide-brimmed fedoras, circa 1947, that came real close to the look you're sporting. If I can find it, I'll post it.

Again, lookin' sharp!:)

Too bad The Sartorialist wasn't snapping pix around that area...I think he'd've like this. It's audaciously, conservatively hip, if you will.
If NYC had park rangers, they would look like this (and if they do have 'em, they should look like this).

Mr. Bern,

It is current issue, Aeronavale de France. It doesn't state the composition on the label. Without this evidence, at the risk of igniting a version of the horsehide vs cowhide debate that has raged on other forums for years, I would guess that it is a wool/polyester serge blend.

Thank you all for the comments & compliments.
Yes, its dangerously close to a UPS uniform!
There was a great episode of Larry Sanders where ColinQuinn plays a slacker nephew who lights up at the thougth of beign a UPS man. "They get to wear shorts & drive around w/ the truck door open!!!!"

And then theres the "RalphKramden' statue in from of the bus terminal.
the busdriver unifrom that looks liek an Ike w/ a zip up the middle

This thread reminded me of my father's Ike jacket. He got it when he served in the Army during the Korean war. I used to wear it to elementary school. It had his SSgt stripes on it, an 8th Army (IIRC) insignia, but I don't recall what else. Wish I knew what happened to it...

Cheers,
Tom

Funny, the same day U mentioned your dad's ike, a colleague came in w/ her uncle's Ike. She was cleaning out her mom's house & was stunned to find it tucked away complete w/ its original insignia & ruptured ducked patch.
Its a tiny size 34R.

I've seen a zipper added. Sort of like on an M41 field jkt.
And I've seen a reenactor w/ a nice one he got at an antique shop that had the zip up the middle like on the ralph kramden bus uniform. So it made me wonder if it was a `50s uniform not specifically military.

What came first?

Not forgetting the british BD blouse - guesse it was before the Ike.
I wear one as a everyday jacket. With jeans, chinos, courdroys...It's light, warm and looking damn cool.

oh a decent pic of a pile of the Brit melamine buttons for this jkt.
They are not sewn on, but held on with cotter pins

They're "vegetable ivory" or bakelite type.
"Bachelor Buttons" is what they're called- just bought 500 of them.
Ring in the button shank and a split pin at back. A sewn eyelet holds the button shank

A few years ago there was a littl shop near bleaker street that had a few in about a size40. Some made in the UK some from belgium. A friend was mad for them, but mine never really thrilled me. Maybe it was the buckle closure. Maybe that its very high waisted. They pop up on ebay.
I'll break it out for our next lunch in tropical nyc.

A couple of years ago I found a source for WWII-era dark OD elastique in an appropriate weight. I will be interested to see what they might charge to make an ike and/or a Class A tunic up for me. I have all of the correct buttons.

Wow! Where? Who? Is this something you can share with us?
I'd base my whole wardrobe around Wool Elastique if I could...
Cheers

Yes indeed. That's a fine example of the later version. They were issued until the 1960s are not uncommon in unissued condition. It also has a pressed steel (rather than wire) buckle, if my eyes do not deceive me.

The earlier pattern button is plain and flat. I'd love to know how they were made. Sometimes the shank is off centre as if they were hand drilled!
