That never works for me because while it tightens up the instep it eats up too much space in the toes. 1/2 insoles just slide. I’ve given up.
Consider buying a full length leather insole and sand down the thickness of the toes and mid-foot so that there is minimal room occupied at the toes. This will prevent the insole from sliding forward as well. Even you don't have any power sanders, you can even use an $3 sanding block from the paint section of your local hardware. Dale's Leatherworks offers three different thicknesses of veg. tan insoles. I hope this link is allowed.

I just don’t think it’s worth the effort. Plenty of great boots with laces and many western slip ons fit me fine.

Has anyone here ever overdyed their engineer boots? I’d like a tutorial if one exists.
I never used acetone on mine. I just painted the dye on, waited a few days, and gently buffed them out. I applied a few coats of Blackrock (carnuba wax) to keep the color safe. Luckily, the color has stayed.

Did this reduce heel slip? I wouldn’t want anything pushing my feet forward in the boot.
For me yes, but I had a pretty skinny achilles ankle area where these sit so these served to fill that area out and keep my foot locked in. Doesn't push my feet forward, since it sits above the heel area and hugs where the heel countours in.

i’ve tried a lot of this stuff. After 6 pairs i’ve given up. I decided i shouldn’t have to modify $750+ boots. They’re not that cool.

I get that reasoning, but to me they are that cool. I also don’t HAVE to modify them. I can cinch the instep down maximally and achieve the same effect, but I’d rather not do that.

I think most of us that have a favorite pair of boots that we are consistently reaching for are worth a little extra effort to improve the fit.
I have 2 pairs of engineers that overall fit me reasonably well, but I don’t mind experimenting a bit with the fit. I wear my engineers more than my lace ups.

any reason why you wouldn't cinch the instep? to avoid wrinkles/creasing?
