It really is starting to bug me that every ebay seller thinks their vintage hat is worth $400 these days!

Trust me there ain't no 7 1/2's going that low. There aren't many 7 1/2 lately that aren't mothbitten or mislabeled. case in point;

I sent a message confirming the sweatband dimensions as 22 1/2 (no tags).That's more like a 7 1/4 than a 7 1/2. Seller said he'd change the listing. He didn't.

There was an Stetson 100 for $1000! even in my giant mellon size they go for under $500.

tommyK--that one got reduced to a mere $800 on the same day that one in a 7 1/2 went for $413.

That make my wallet hurt.. My wife was surfing ebay and looking at the hat listing and ask me . Are you going to sell any you gotten? I say I wasn't planing on it why? she said All these hat selling for so high.. I said no they just LISTING really high. Watch them for few weeks you see they will sell or flip over for a few sales then drop in price.
Ebay isn't any mark of what some thing is worth . it a crazy mixed up way find how to sell to some one who think s it the right price.
I just posted and sold a PS3 game ebay said my price was too high .. I sold it at my price. with 24 or more of posted but under 48 hrs. Hats list for 10 days or more and sell basted on size and style and how clean they are or how some see them as Vintage or rare (or best thin they are)
I note I for most I can see the same style over and over and some never again or just not for very long time.
I wonder If you don't see the same duplicate hat week after week is that hat rare in some way? the dobb's fifteen i have . It is very nice clean hat but the style i have not seen again on ebay since i got it At lease not for the low price I got at.. I filter out high priced hats .. I don't have the fund and my wife would kill me on getting one that make me put in glass case never to where it .. I do look at the styles of the high hats that some to be priced around what new one sells for . I live in small farming town out side Sacramento . there is good Western shop that carries higher end hats and does cleaning and blocking on the hats .. Have two there now. I look at the price of new Stetson and was shock they were selling for so high but i do understand that the Rabbit and Beaver pelts for making the fur felt is getting costly well here in the US that falling for the Animal right BS..
The owner said he like my hat collection and said I done great at getting good hats at low cost. He said he may have people willing to pay for some to shop out older hats.. Not sure i could play well with other people money but hey I love to shop deals So that could work out.
I need to get off ebay for bit for buying and get some my other steampunk stuff up for sale. Not going to any events right now. So I need to get the funds back and used them for other items of fun. My wife would be very happy to see me do that.

I was also watching that one as it is my head size, but your right lately they start low and end up going for some crazy price.
The only way that I buy hats like that is if I can sneak in at the last second and snipe it cheaply.

Hats add up quickly. It might be worthwhile to spend a little more on a couple rather than wind up with 40 of the same hat.

It's funny you mention that. I've been trying to get a 3X or better Open Road for about a 6 months now. I always get outbid even up to $400. As best I can tell it's the same 2 or 3 guys buying all of them. Honestly, guys let me have just one and I won't bid against you again and you can go back to getting them for $200 or less!

I get your point though, quality over quantity.

I wish I were a better disciple of this philosophy. But it is hard to develop a feel for the subject without experiencing different quality levels, eras and countries of manufacture. Leave room for a few mistakes. Most hats can be resold to recoup most if not all of what you paid. Any shortfall is the price of tuition. Keep an eye out for a 1950s Borsalino thin ribbon in your size. I think you will enjoy it as much or more than the Open Road.
