I wanted to try for this 7 5/8 Briggs but there was a reserve, and I really can't stand reserve prices. Even so, it didn't actually sell, though I think the bidding reached a fair amount. I don't think this seller has much experience selling hats.

That Playboy got a bit out of hand. Lounge hype may have done it.
This little Resistol was pretty nice.

I didn't get that Playboy, but I did score this Open Road

I am still learning a lot about finding and bidding on hats on ebay. Inspite of the millions of people who view ebay, it only takes one or two new people in a given size and style to push up prices. I am probably now guilty of that on 7 1/2's. I know a hat is worth whatever someone will pay. Trying to determine what to pay is a challenge for a newbie someone. I probably helped drive up the price of that Playboy and yes, it was due to FL hype on that style and felt. My reasoning was it got to where I could get a new Borsalino Como II or a custom Mike Moore for the same price.....that caused me to back out. Probably faulty reasoning from a "what is a Playboy worth perspective," but it is how I thought about it.

I did win this Open Road at the very highest dollar I had bid. Fifty cents more and I would have lost it. I hope the round indentation will come out. Any thoughts? Is that a flaw that won't go away? I know that I will make mistakes while I learn, not sure if this is one of them. I belong to several watch forums where you can ask questions about current OFAS auctions. That helps newbies. I guess that is a no no here. Here are the pics of my new hat!

Here's my first ebay win . . .

Love this hat . . .the color is awesome . . .the ribbon/band fabulous and the stitching in the weave of the hat matches the band.

I called the seller of the Briggs in Denver this morning and had a lovely conversation. Her husband is a retired physician who now works at the VA hospital in Denver where they relocated after he retired. She opened an antique shop and has been doing so well on ebay that they have downsized their brick & mortar shop. A native of Germany, she found the hat in Wiesbaden and brought it back to the US where it ended up in her shop as it is too large for her husband. As you can tell, we had a long conversation.

Anyway, the hat with the original box and form was $155.00 but shipping is free. Shipping a large box within another box could easily cost $20.00 or more. So, the hat and the original box cost $130-135. Not too bad. :)

Good grief, Carter!

Your bank statements would reduce me to a psych ward for breakdown treatment.

Post pictures when you get it. I was really into it, but only at a total steal.

Just got my Stetson Royal De Luxe & 1/8

I'll likely send it to Optimo to be shaped to one of their style porkpies. (I have one of Johnnyphi's Whippets there now- awaiting it's return.)

Can anyone offer any ideas for other options?

Rumblefish:

I like the porkpie plan. I have an Adam with a nice wide ribbon like yours, and it looks like it was designed to be a porkpie. Maybe it was! Nice score.
