Slightly out of focus, but still eminently Douglas-worthy!

gtdean, That's a real bummer on the Playboy. But... congratulations on a very nice OR.

Seller sizing has always been an issue. Absent a tag (and sometimes with a tag), they're often incorrect. The only recourse is to confirm the size yourself.

After a discussion with Baron Kurtz in another thread, I found a circumference calculator online that works well. If a buyer can get the seller to send interior length and width measurements, this is a quick way to confirm the size of a hat. I have the link saved under my Favorites.

Too good to be true. This hat is a 6 1/2 if that. Contacted the seller about returning it. Stay tuned...
When I contacted the seller about how the hat was measured = "From your posting "measures 23 1/2 Diameter. The piece is a 7 1/2", how did you measure the diameter? On the outside or the inside? There is NO way this is a size 7 1/2. It is closer to a 6 1/2 as it will not even fit on the crown of my head as I am a 7 1/2 long oval. Please advise as to how I can return for a refund."
He replied back with = "I measured it with a tape measure"
I ask him did he send the wrong hat & immediately went to PayPal & filed a dispute to which he replied = "Its the right hat...thank you for opening a paypal claim...now we get to wait 60 days to settle this instead of doing it like met together good one moron."
Spelling not withstanding, a consumate professional vendor I'm dealing with here.

Thanks Carter = with his posting of measurement even though he said diameter instead of circumference, it looked good. Live & Learn...

diameter instead of circumference

That's apparently just a typo - that hat isn't nearly 2 feet long. It's pretty clear that he meant circumference, but measured either (1) around the wrong spot (outside, like you said), or (2) badly.

What is the circumference? I know that you said it fits more like a 6 1/2, but now I'm curious as to whether it is a 6 1/2 (I'm not sure I've seen a hat tagged that small), or a 7 1/2 that shrunk a few sizes.

This is why vintage women's hats are better - they're sized by circumference, in inches.

I'm at work now, Lefty & can't measure it but will tonight when I get home. Your comment about the 1/2 tag is my question as well. Never seen one but didn't know about vintage tags. This thing barely fits on the crown of my head. Did they make kids versions?
Here is the latest exchange with this gentleman...

My reply to his moron name calling = We don't have to wait 60 days.
Way to be a "mat" with the moron name calling.
With your lame initial reply about what you measured it with instead of where, I did what is recommended by ebay/PayPal to invoke buyer protection. See description below:
"Most disputes are the result of simple misunderstandings. It’s best to initiate communication with the seller as soon as you recognize a potential problem.
You can open a dispute in the Resolution Center within 45 calendar days of payment. By opening a dispute, you are able to communicate directly with your seller to work out a problem transaction.
If you and your seller are unable to agree on a solution, you must escalate the dispute to a PayPal claim within 20 calendar days of the date the dispute was opened. By escalating to a claim, you would be asking PayPal to review the case and decide the outcome"
I have NOT escalated but thanks for the confidence building attitude & being so professional.
If you refund my payment, I will gladly ship the hat back.

His comeback = Not a chance am i sending some scam artist money first...again moron you have to send first to get paypal to give you the money...and regardless of what youve done they have take money out of my account...good luck!

From Village Hat Shop's site, a 6 1/2 would be only 20 1/4 inches. I'm not sure if the smallest that I've seen has been a 6 5/8 or a 6 3/4 (more likely), but a 6 1/2 has got to be a pretty rare size.

Good luck in your dealings with the seller.

gtd,
WOW...I hope this all works out for you. I was seriously considering bidding on that hat but I had my eye on another hat as well and couldn't afford to buy both.

You just never know!

After a reply like that, I'd be likely to take a week off of work, drive to his house, and send him to the dentist with a torn hat for a bib.

The latest exchange...

Him (from earlier) = Not a chance am i sending some scam artist money first...again moron you have to send first to get paypal to give you the money...and regardless of what youve done they have take money out of my account...good luck!

Me = Scam artist & again moron...you are 1 class act.
For pete's sake, you are talking about under $200 & you are putting at risk a hat you paid far less than that for?
I'm trying to figure how the 1/2 tag got in this hat which seems out of place & suspect.
You have YET to mention refunding process that I asked about on the initial message I sent you.

Him = How about I send you 20 bucks, you go buy a personallity and stick hat where I tell ya?

Me = How about you refund my money.
Do you think I'd use my name in an email addr if I was trying to scam people or would I use something lame like midwessales?
Grow up punk.

You should probably just cool it at this point and let the dispute process run its course. You want him to look like the bad guy, not you. I realize that it's frustrating, but you'll only hurt yourself if you continue along these lines.

RE: Stratoliner

There was a time in the distant past when a seller tried something similar, I think he was disappointed with the final sales price & tried to jerk someone here around demanding a higher price. My memory of the particulars evades me but I do recall many, many of us here at TFL flooded his inbox with messages to the effect of "you need to do the right thing and do it quick". He got the message. Is something similar warranted here do you think?

Very interesting. It does seem he has shut off any avenue to resolve it almost from the jump. I always thought mid-westerners (midwessales) were such nice folks to do business with, especially those on AOL.COM

You will not get your money back. The listing was so vague. 23 1/2 diameter? This says nothing. That's about 9.25" if the 23 1/2 was cm. So long as he can find any measurement at all on the hat that even comes close to 23 1/2 cm, he's in the clear. For everything else he can claim ignorance.

Unless. Unless! Unless!!!, you asked a question (while the auction was running) and he answered it in such a way as to leave no doubt as to how he made the measurement and what scale the measurement was made on.

What does it say on the reorder labels under the sweatband? You can't use this to help get your money back (unless you asked him to look while the auction was running; it's not reasonable to expect a seller to know where to look) but it might help you decide if it's 7 1/2 or 6 1/2. Can you measure the front to back and side to side interior when you get home?

Wou will win the SNAD complaint with PayPal. Pay Pal will ask you to return the hat at your expense. MAKE CERTAIN THAT YOU USE DELIVERY CONFIRMATION, OR SIGNATURE CONFIRMATION OF THE AMOUNT IN QUESTION APPROACHED $200.00! Take the parcel to the Post Office yourself, and make certain that the clerk scans the confirmation slip. You can then give PayPal the confirmation number and they will refund your initial payment.

In the future, please remember that it is always good form to contact the seller FIRST, before contacting eBay or PayPal and filing a dispute. If the seller is difficult, there is always time to file later.
