Dobbs Disaster

3 arrived and size and condition do not resemble the listing. All were described as 7 to 7-1/4 with an 8" opening. One qualifies. All described in good condition again only one qualifies. Said no size tags, 2 had tags and factory stickers,1 had size tag + 2 forms of factory markings. The taupe and gray are 6-7/8. Taupe is a Twenty with Cavanagh Edge and dead "Leisure-Flex" sweatband. The brown Cross-Country is a 7-1/8 with perfect felt but the sweatband has virtually no intact stitches. They look better in the photos than in person. Although the one on the right is in good shape but tiny and looks like JtL's Gay Blade. I brushed them off and creased, they were crushed and dirtier. Anyone interested or I'll have to return for a loss.

Wow, that's too bad about the Cross Country. I was watching that one; it looked like a nice '40s-era hat. Why not have a new sweatband installed and save it for yourself?

The others look like '50s. How much did the taupe one go for? I didn't watch that one.

All 3 were $40.00 each. The Cross-Country has a Newspaper with no date but with stories about the UN and legal problem for"Ex-President Truman".

OK I've dated the stories to 1953 so its at least that old.

Hat Corporation of America reregistered "Cross Country" in 1949, so this definitely fits into that time frame. The trademark must have lapsed from when C&K first registered it in 1927. I know the slanted, gold-stamped "Dobbs" is mid-to-late-'40s (though resurrected late in Hat Corp.'s life), and perhaps it lasted into the early-'50s, as this hat suggests.

The hat has its size tag, a factory tag on the underside of the sweatband and the factory stamp at the base of the crown. The story is probably c. 11/53. No OPS tags so either fresh from 1953 or before OPS.

I'm surprised that No.1 quality went so high. Usually that style and era of western hat goes under the radar.

Thanks, all.

Dinerman - it would have gone under the radar, except I opened my big mouth and asked for a photo of the sweatband. Based on the outside shot and the frayed bow, I pretty much knew what it was. So I paid the 'open big mouth' tax :)

She promised me that it had no moth damage - only some greenish corrosion at the back of the sweatband.
