I was going to say that it was the finest montecristi I have seen... but after looking more closely, I still think you found a swell hat. I also have that deeply printed liner - a beauty.

They say all good things come to those who wait. And for this.. I waited so patiently.

The box did not fare as well... but of little concern.

Not sure this one has been worn much if at all

this one finally goes down as a victory!

For what I think you paid for it that is massive victory, Joe! I think this is the one I actually forgot to bid on. Fingers crossed that smudge on the crown comes out. Mid fifties to about 1960 for this one. Gorgeous.

Well. Thanks for forgetting.. I guess LOL we will see about the smudge. Though once creased it's not as prominent.

This one ended up making a pit stop in Minnesota while I received a minnow bucket. But it all worked out. And thank the stars the other guy did not use this beautiful hat for a minnow pail as I tried on the bucket for fit

All and all a decent delay. But the seller did me right and refunded the shipping on his own accord and offered a partial refund for the damaged box... which I declined as I am grateful for his diligence and correcting the shipping error.

Looking forward to getting some photos.

Lordy, is that another fool seller who put a label on the vintage hat box, taped it up, and put it in the mail without putting it in a protective box??
Well. I suspect the seller boxed it up properly... but then put the wrong label on it and shipped it to the wrong guy. Then THAT guy did the label on the hat box gimmick in passing it along to me. A shame... but all and all came out very well.

Ah, yes. I see above that there was a shipping mix up in the first place.

i wanted a western straw for the summer and snagged this guy yesterday. i <knew> shipping charge per auction wasn't near what it was going to cost to get hat across the country so i offered seller that i'd cover half shipping over what was originally charged if she'd pretty please not bend or crush hat and ship in a stiff box. though she sent the thing retail ground (CO to MA) i think she followed my directions .. we'll see i guess :|
hat's pretty cool right? 50s or early 60s i think? i can't find this model in a catalog yet. i'll post more on "western straw" thread assuming it arrives as a hat and not hay. hope everyone's well out there!

I can't resist a bargain Optimo. Besides, the seller says that this one has a thinner felt, so it is probably their Zephyr Weight felt. I have been curious to see how a Zephyr Optimo compares to vintage. From the look of the crease, is is thinner felt. I can't wait to find out.

Nice, Max. I saw it and considered it, but I’m just not that much of a black hat fan...now I’m regretting it a bit. :)

Dang, Brent! I really have been wanting to know how Optimo's Zephyr Weight compares with vintage, ever since someone asked me how Optimo felts (FEPSA) compare to them.
I answered that Optimos are thicker, and less moldable, but have a wonderful hand. Then, Daniele told me that pure beaver felts are like that, so I started wondering if Optimo Zephyrs would be like, maybe, the Stetson ThreeWay I have on right now on my balcony...
I really want to know, Brent! If it isn't, I will send it to you when I go to Texas to pick it up, OK?

I really appreciate that, Max. I had my chance at the hat and passed. I knew this was going to haunt me. Your generosity is much appreciated, but I’ve spent my hat budget on several custom hats so this outstanding Optimo will get to stay a part of your excellent collection. I’m looking forward to your review once you pick it up...Is it wrong that I’m hoping you don’t say it’s the best hat in your collection. :)

I'm the seller...this time at least. I picked it up on the 'Bay when the previous seller had three listed a couple months ago. Said he was a friend of Graham and gets to the shop a lot. I love it but just can't pull off the brim/look for some reason. I guess not all hats are for everyone, sadly... Sorry to all the big-head guys like me who missed out! (It's a 7 5/8.) I do like the lightweight felt. Reminds me of an old Borsalino I have.

The risks of buying hats online. The actual colour according to the seller, how it photographs in the lighting, how it looks on my monitor, how my eyes interpret it....and on and on.
Yep. Luckily he engaged with me and asked if I was a Lounger so we got to talk about the hat a lot and I sent him some more photos. When I originally bought it it was described as having a pretty dominant green element but I mostly don't see it, more charcoal to my eye. Gorgeous hat though. Wish it worked on me!
