To Hat Corp., at any rate! The question is, did he sell it, or just license it out? Did other companies license it? I must admit, I haven't researched sweatband patents to any extent. Glad Dinerman notices these things.

An outstanding lightweight beautiful felt in perfect condition that molds fantastically. The sweatband however is dry and crispy. The real problem:The actual size is 55cm(6-7/8) not the 58cm(7-1/4) described in the listing.
As it came from Italy, the question is, send it back and be out about $30.00 and have nothing, or.....?

It's bad outcome either way. A 6 7/8 won't fetch $40 here or on ebay. The postage you paid to get it and the return postage probably eat up the cost of the hat. Sorry about that one.

This would be an idea if it weren't off by 3 sizes(smaller) which would require a rebuild with resulting total change in proportions since upsizing would require a larger felt to work with. Crown and brim would have to be smaller. I guess you could make a stingy brim. It would also become an expensive hat.
I'll be sending it back.

yoohoo...(waving hand at the screen here....)

our son is 12-1/2, he's a 21" head size, his beaver opera hat is 6-7/8. The little 50-60s stingy brim (?) hat we just got him Sat is 6-3/4. Let's talk.:D

The only posts that I've found on Gelot are by Matt Deckard, writing about their modern hats and calling them terrible, and Art, calling their vintage felt the best from France. Modern incarnations pop-up on ebay every now and then and do look fourth rate. I've never seen one that looks older than 60s. I think that there's only one Gelot on the Lounge.

I inherited a 1920s black "Gelot" homburg that belonged to my great-grandmother's 2nd husband, Frederic Sheid. (He was the very wealthy heir to Belgium's then largest maritime shipping company, Armament Deppe.) It is the only hat that I will never sell. A work of beauty.

But for some reason the really long ones - the 5th and 10th anniversry editions never fetched the high prices.[huh]

That's because there are a handful of collectors who are trying to get every issue. They're not buying in order to resell. If collector "X" already has the 5th or the 10th anniversary edition, he/she won't bother bidding for another copy of it.

At present, the most avid bidder for APPAREL ARTS issues is a Japanese gentleman, followed by a Frenchwoman. (I've sold several issues to both.)

I know of only two places that have (or had) every single issue of APPAREL ARTS. One set is in the Conde Nast company archives; the other is (or was) in the home of Avery Lucas.
