PayPal just announced updates to their service agreement. There's one important change:

Amendment to the PayPal Account User Agreement for Sellers

• PayPal may use any of the payment methods linked to a seller’s PayPal account to prevent the seller’s account from becoming negative when there are not sufficient funds in the account for seller refunds, reversals and chargebacks.

So this means that you can't protect yourself by removing funds from your account in order to protect them from eBay Buyer Protection scams. Ebay would refund the buyer, and then PayPal would charge whatever accounts you have linked to your PayPal account to keep your PayPal balance going negative.

I don't know if you can unlink the funding methods from your PayPal account in advance, anticipating an unfair outcome, but it seems like it'd be a big pain to link/unlink your accounts whenever something happens. But it seems like it'd be a smart plan. Maybe smarter to not use PayPal anymore, but I imagine that's pretty difficult considering how ubiquitous PayPal has been.

Had the same thing happen to me on my latest purchase. A 125£ jacket turned into a 205£ jacket thanks to the global shipping program.

Don't forget that Global shipping includes taxes, wheras a parcel shipped with regular mail will be stopped at customs and will incure exra charges.

I wouldn't be surprised if in this case the you ended up paying more for the Schott once you add Import tax, VAT and handling fees...

Well both yes and no actually. The taxes are calculated on the eBay selling price , this post cost is as listed on the sale page.
At this stage it is ONLY the mail charges...

Believe me , I have been buying ex_US to Australia for years , and "Global Shitting" ( sorry , Freudian slip there !) has made it more expensive to ship jackets here. Same applies from the UK to Australia as well

It's quite remarkable. Mine's been stuck in Lichfield since the 11th and has an estimated delivery in Norway on the 29th of this month. We're paying a lot more to get our goods a lot slower

When I was a student in the U.K., I dated a girl from Olney and went there a couple of times. It's right outside Milton Keynes.
But it's an old village, very small. The kind of place where everyone knows everyone. If you walk into the 'pub' by yourself, it's like the beginning of An American Werewolf in London. The whole place is straight out of The League of Gentlemen, the TV show. Very insular. She went on to be a fitness instructor with an Aston Martin (they build them just down the road from Olney). Too bad it didn't work out.

Okay, so if you see that the seller is shipping an item through eBay's Global Shipping Program, skip it!!! I mean it. Don't buy it!

It's been over two weeks now that I'm waiting for a computer component tp arrive from UK. Something that I actually need to do my job. And it's not even international shipping per se, the item is going from one EU country to another. According to the tracking provided by eBay, it's exactly midway so I guess that's another two weeks of waiting.

By the way, eBay / GSP estimated time of delivery expired 5 to 8 days ago.

I've asked the seller about it and they responded that the GSP is killing their business because of the extremely slow shipping and that they apologize. I can only imagine how many complaints and negative reviews people must've been receiving because of it.

eBay is literally the worst. There isn't a single positive thing they've done in the past 10 years and I this close to boycotting it altogether. To hell with it.

If Amazon gets its act together with the marketplace, it could kill ebay. Etsy has made huge inroads into eBay's sales, but only for certain types of product. (PLus etsy's search tool is not good).

If I was going to be out of pocket the full amount or this bullshit return forced on me that’s exactly what I was going to do abandon/close both my PayPal and eBay accounts.

$100 out of pocket I can live with vs abandoning my accounts that I’ve had close for 18 years and use regularly.

I’ll continue to use eBay as a seller I just won’t be selling overseas anymore.

I only ship to people who live in the US to avoid the hassles of international shipping/returns. My last sale on eBay was to a US address, but it was an international shipping distributor. The buyer lived in China and paid a company in the US to ship the product to them. When I got to the post office, the employee told me the address was invalid. I looked it up and found mixed reviews. I contacted the buyer who corrected the address (zip code) and sent it on its ways. I had worries that the buyer would file a damaged item report or similar. But their account was several years old and I went with my best intentions. Everything worked out in the end.

Long story short: restricting sales to your country can still be worked around.

But their account was several years old and I went with my best intentions. Everything worked out in the end.

So was this US address a verified PayPal address? Anything goes wrong package gets lost your out of pocket, I regularly have people wanting me to ship something to a mate or some other address not associated with the buyers account, and it’s always a no

I looked at my most recent Paypal transactions and I didn’t see anything that said it was a confirmed address. It was an issue with the zip code.

It does make me wonder since I couldn’t find a clear answer: if a buyer uses an international shipping service, does the obligation as the seller stop after it’s been received to that address? If something goes wrong and the buyer wants to return, would the seller have to pay for shipping from the buyer’s actual address or only from where it wa shipped?

I recently sold a langlitz to a USA address that was a re shipper. The actual buyer lived in China. I was very hesitant so requested payment "friends and family" for my safety. The buyer agreed. Jacket shipped. No problems.
