Yes, you can dye a hat. But it's so involved that you'd very likely have less money into it, and have more satisfactory results, if you just bought a black hat.
You'd have to strip the hat down to the body (remove the sweatband and liner and ribbon and all). You'd have to use a dye designed for protein-based fiber, and that stuff ain't cheap. The body will very likely shrink some, so even reblocking (which will of course be required) may not get the hat back to its original dimensions. And then you'd have to put it all back together again. In other words, it would be a big hassle. I've actually done this, once. I doubt I'll ever do it again.
