So, I just received the magazine I ordered and agree about the dead animals on display. Personally I find that a bit disturbing.

Other than that the quality of the magazine is below standard, something I have never encountered before. The paper isn't glossy at all, and all the colours seem off, especially people's skin colours. None of the images are sharp. The front page also looks strange. Do they actually produce fake magazines? The place I bought from offers single issues or whole subscriptions, so it just seems so odd.

Taxidermy isn't for everyone!

That's strange about the quality of your magazine - I just had another look at mine and it's fine - the only thing that annoys me about US Style is that there tends to be a lot of bitty articles that seem like complete fillers to me (particularly at the start of the magazine - all those voting things?) - I want something a bit more substantial to read and look at.

Here's the thing, in the 20's and 30's, homes of the stately type often had stuffed wild boar, bear, birds, etc.

That may be true, but I don't think that one needs to stick to every single detail of times past to be stylish or follow a lifestyle. I am pretty glad that advances have been made in ethics, social behaviour, and attitudes towards racism and sexism for instance. Animal rights have also progressed since then, and I personally find displaying dead swans utterly tasteless, whether it was "the done thing" back then or not. It just seems disrespectful of the animal's life to me, but that is a personal opinion and perhaps similar to different attitudes about fur.

I see that she was careful to state that all her stuffed animals died of natural causes - regardless it still wouldn't be my thing....I found them all (particularly the swans) really creepy....

I want that magazine!

Not sure about having dead things around but I think Dita is really interesting. She really lives her style - it isn't just for the red carpet or special events.

Don't get me wrong, *I* wouldn't have taxidermy in my home, but it was popular back in the day. I think a stuffed/mounted anything is gross.

I agree with you. One really has to hunt to find a carcass of a naturally demised animal that hasn't been ravaged by nature or other animals. I realize that it wasn't unusual to have such displays in the 1920's or 1930's, but vintage authenticity can be conveyed just as easily without them.

I think it would make me sad every time I looked at it! An old friend of my Grandma had butterflies pinned into frames and they were bad enough.

I agree, it is sad. I found the monkey most disturbing (and very reminiscent of Michael Jackson!). I have to say that I don't find the display of dead stuffed animals for decoration any better than people in past times going to see "savages" at freak shows. It's the attitude towards what was once a living being that irks me. Then again, i also don't go to zoos or dolphin shows to stare at living captivated animals, so it's just a different preference I guess.
I also don't understand people who have their pets prepared after they die and keep them on display at home. I love my animals dearly, but once they die they get buried and I keep photos around, not their dead bodies.
Apart from that, I don't understand how she keeps them clean. What does one use to clean a stuffed swan? They must get really dusty with time, no?

Somehow I can't imagine Dita cleaning anything or even getting dirty. What would she wear?? lol
Oh and the animals freak me out too. Don't ever go to rural Virginia. You won't find a house there that doesn't have dead deer looking at you :eeek:

But she doesn't live in a stately home :D

Also I think it comes more from her relationship with Marilyn Manson and not necessarily from wanting her interests in vintage things as he has that sort of thing too.

Ok off the Dita Topic but on the taxidermy topic. This is one of our local artist and she is a totally vintage lady but she definetly has an interesting media she has chosen to work in

Sarina was in Bust magazine recently. Perhaps this is an Rural American type thing (you know the right to bear arms and all that) most of our neighbors around here are hunters my husband has a cousin who has a room in his house we call the Death room.

I must admit that I have always loved taxidermy. As a kid I wanted a stuffed squirrel, had a poster of an orchestra of stuffed hamster, was and still am totally fascinated by the pieces in museums. I even thought about becoming a taxidermist myself. I´m not a fan of hunted animals that get stuffed, though. Or hunting animals in general.
My cousin worked as a taxidermist in a museum and most of the animals there were found by people and then brought to the museum. I had the chance to take a look at the whole process and it´s absolutely fascinating. And it´s kind of an art to make them look and pose like they are real.

The link is great, by the way.
