Differences in Indy Hats?

This probably has been discussed before but I can't find it in a search. If it has then please direct me to the topic.

Newbie questions -

After watching the Raiders movie last night on TV and seeing the new Crystal Skull movie last weekend, I've noticed that Dr. Jones hat has changed. It seems to have a wider brim and the sides curve upward in the first movie?

To make a long story short, I like the look of the first hat a lot better than the new one. Is there a basic hat out there that can be purchased "off the rack" and be made into a hat that looks like the first Raider's hat?

OR If I was going to tell someone to custom make me a hat like the first one, then what would the description of the style/bash, brim width, etc. be (does anyone have the original specs for this hat)? Thanks!

You should check out Club Obi Wan herein referred to as COW as they discuss all the nuances of all the indy flicks as well as the clothing, but fromwhat I gather you want a federation from adventurebilt

As I understand it, the best value 'Indy hat' available at a relatively reasonable price but offering high quality is generally held to be the Akubra Federation IV:

There is the lower cost standard version:

http://www.hatsdirect.com/cgi/products.cgi?view=45&returncat=Fedora+Hats&returnpage=0

and the Deluxe with higher quality felt and finish:

http://www.hatsdirect.com/cgi/products.cgi?view=44&returncat=Fedora+Hats&returnpage=0

Also check out this thread:

http://www.thefedoralounge.com/showthread.php?t=30427&highlight=moonstone

and this link for the bash:

http://adventure-realm.com/raidersbash.html

I am going to get the Deluxe version in brown as an 'Indy hat' and the standard version in Moonstone (a light grey).

Check IndyGear and Club Obi-Wan for endless detail on the movie hats (which are slightly different in each of the four films) and the many purchasing choices available for an "Indy hat".

The short answer is, the Akubra Federation (IV) from HatsDirect and the Akubra Adventurer from David Morgan are the best just-over-$100 choices. There are a range of choices depending on how much you want to spend, including the outstanding Adventurebilt, which is exactly the same hat worn by Ford in Crystal Skull.

Yes, Club Obi-Wan will tell you all--and more than!--you need to know. There were some threads posted recently with reference collages from each of the four films to show the differences in the hat styles. Very handy.

For quick off the rack the Akubra would be the best choice, but also take a look at Camptown. Adventurebilt--the ultimate in Indy hats and makers of the hats for KoTCS--is working on a high quality factory version, too.

Thank you all! Excellent and informative references. I still have no idea which hat I want, but I'm more informed about my indecision now.

Club Obi-Wan also recently updated their main page, Indygear.com, which has a very detailed discussion of the fedoras from each of the films, as well as descriptions of many of the best vendors for re-creations of these various Indiana Jones fedoras (from Adventurebilt to Akubra, etc.). The direct link to all of this can be found here: http://www.indygear.com/igfedora.html

best wishes,

I'm a COW member, and I've seen most major offerings in person. The Federation IV (which I just saw recently) is a great off-the shelf option. The crown is untapered and the brim is the right proportions for a Raiders hat.

For custom, your best options are the AB and AB Deluxe. They made the Indy 4 hat, which is the same crown block, but bashed differently and with a shorter brim. In ordering from AB, you can specify you want a Raiders style, and can even choose a scene that you prefer. Also, for the distinct swoop and uneven look to the brim, you'll want what's called the "turn".

Trust me . ;)

I saw this over at COW a while ago and saved it. Don't remember who made it.
Enjoy.
