As long as we're on the topic...does anyone know where to get a sweater like the one Jurgen Prochnow was wearing throughout the movie?

I've been looking for years!

Must be a NZ thing BT. Rodd and Gunn were offering a nearly exact copy of this as well a few years back.

This looks just like the Wermacht coat but in a 3/4 length. I just picked up one of these off eBay thanks to the thread on the topic. Got it for $65 (shipped):

Kind regards,

Beautiful. And perfect fit.

Wow, this thread was last posted in during January, 2008. I had been a member for only two years, but well remember the thread and think I posted in it.

Holy Thread Revival, Batman!

I have been looking through this thread and I have to say, the leather jackets in it aren't really my style...
But the jacket I love is the one the Captain is wearing in the saluting photo, further up the page, sorry I can't seem to quote it.
I have been trawling (see what I did there..?) the internet for a while now and cannot find out exactly what the jacket is.
Does anybody know?
No matter if not, it still gives the opportunity to talk about an amazing film.

I’m no expert but that jacket you mean does not look like having been an official piece of a German Kriegsmarine uniform.

Though U-Boot staff had and still has a reputation of being kind of unconventional it is very unlikely that an officer or below would have worn anything else but official clothing near land, for sure not in the Kriegsmarine where discipline had a very specific taste those days.
I think that approach is more due to considering the author of the book this movie is basing on.

From what I've read (offline) the sub crews were considered elite and were given wide latitude in what they wore, etc. Not suprising given their tough living/operating conditions, and more broadly that their survival rate was very, very low...

Maybe in sea, depending on the commander, but certainly not anywhere near land.

From eBay, came in the mail today, and what I believe is an original jacket from the war. I have reproductions from nearly all the makers that do these jackets and everything about this jacket seems correct. Fits me to a tee as well. Can’t believe my luck!
