Hi All,

Anyone know where I can find a cool
chauffeur's cap or old fashioned taxi driver's cap?
I'm a 7 1/2 LO-7 5/8.

Anyone have any personal experience with
these, from Miller Hats?
The downside, aside from price ($50 for a gag), is that there is no company
logo, making clear what they are.

It's a bit of a gag. I'm buying my first car in around
10 years and will be doing a lot of chauffeuring of a 12 year old...

If you have a vintage one to sell, let me know, too.
And yes, I am looking on our favorite auction site, but
would like to get it w/in the next month.

Thanks!

I don't have a taxicab driver's cap, but I kinda think I just might maybe have the metal "badge" that attaches to the front of one. I qualify that five ways to Tuesday because if that old Yellow Cab medallion is still in my possession, I wouldn't know where to begin to look for it. My best guess is that it's in some box or drawer stowed away in one of my two overstuffed sheds in the back yard up at the Seattle house, where my sister-in-law currently resides. (She gets a sweet deal on rent, so she has to put up with my crap in the sheds and my dead '67 Triumph Spitfire in the carport.)
As I recall, the medallion is half-circle shaped, with two threaded posts on the back that apparently went through grommeted holes on the cap. And, as also I recall, one of the nuts that secure the badge to the cap is missing, but that would be easy enough to replace down at the hardware store.
In the event I come across it, I'll drop you a line.

That would be great, Tony.

It's a good point- it's not so hard to find a cap
without the medallion. It'd be fine with me to
install a badge/medallion on a cap that doesn't have
one.

You have plenty of time to find that hat then! lol

By then won't you be chauffeuring a 22-year-old?

Ahem.

It has been 10 years since I have owned a car.
I am buying one some time soon. I will be chauffeuring
a 12 year old (and others). Gee, some people...

As this hat looks very similar to a police peaked cap. I'm not sure if it's illegal. I don't want to impersonate a police officer. If i do plan on buying this hat I plan to wear it with jeans and open collar dress shirts. Thanks and I hope you guys would educate me on hat etiquette =D."

I personally think a chauffeur's cap looks too formal for casual wear, but some members here say the same of fedoras and I wear mine with jeans and tee shirts, so to each his/her own. I don't know what police officers wear in Toronto, but here in the U.S. most would only wear that type of cap with a dress uniform, so unless you're planning to also wear a uniform and badge I think you'll be okay.

I noticed you posted a photo of Sergei Rachmaninoff in the Styleforum thread. In that photo he's wearing a flat cap (more specifically known as a Newsboy cap, a Touring cap, an 8-Panel cap, or an 8/4 Panel cap), a style which is widely available and has a more casual appearance. You can view a number of them in this thread if you're interested.

Another style that is similar to the chauffeur cap, widely available, and has a more casual appearance is commonly known as a Greek Fisherman's cap.

To be clear, I'm not trying to dissuade you from purchasing a chauffeur's cap if you really want one, I'm simply pointing out some alternatives that you might not have considered.

With regards to hat etiquette, if you type "hat etiquette" in the search feature you'll find a number of threads on the subject, and a number of opinions on what is or isn't considered "proper" these days. Good luck!

You might want to try:

I don't care much for that Christy's version. But this version, I think, might look pretty good with jeans, and with a leather jacket too! It looks something similar to the hat that Marlon Brando wore in the "Wild One"....

You might like the motorist/cyclist caps made by Barry Simonds and/or Diamond Cap Co. Hat-Cap-Simonds Motorist 3.jpg

I've always like the chauffeur hat. As a young man I had an idea for a business. I planned to purchase an old Packard One-Seventy limousine and rent it out for weddings and other such events. I intended to get the whole chauffeur's rig: hat, tunic, jodhpurs, and long gloves.

Like many a business plan, it foundered due to undercapitalization: I never managed to save up enough to actually buy the Packard. But I still admire the uniforms in old photos and sigh...
