Wool or fur felt? The only thing new I can think of in fur felt is the Jaxon Bogart for $68 from village hat shop. You could always find one on ebay or depending on your size try the auction in the merchants section but you need to get 15 posts to participate. I think those are starting bids at $75 though.

No offense, but at that price point, you'll probably be restricted to choices in wool. Would you consider going up to the $100.00 range? It would broaden your choices and you'd start to get into fur felt territory. I think you'll find the fur far superior to the wool- especially if you plan to wear a hat in the rain.
Just my "free" opinion- and worth every penny!;)

If you live in South Carolina then you definitely want fur. Wool will shrink and be difficult in that hot, humid environment. Look for a good buy in an antique shop.

That Jaxon Bogart would probably b a good choice.

If there are any Burlington Coat Factory stores in you area, go take a look.
They often have good quality fur felt hats there for less than $40.00. Amazingly, I've seen some for under $25.00. Unfortunately I've never found one of those in my size that I liked.

I don't think Burlington had any Huckel hats at all this year. I looked at numerous BCF in several states when I was travelling. The only hats they had were a cheap feeling Steve Harvey hat.

Are you interested in anything vintage, yet "nearly new"? If so, what size do you wear?

If you are interested in vintage, I just bought the following hats on eBay, but they are too small for me. I wear a 7-1/8, so they should fit a size 7 very nicely.

I'm finding that a lot of the vintage hats run about 1 size small. Especially true for Cavanagh and Borsalino. The Dobbs hats seem to run true to size. Stetsons run about 1/2 size small, in my experience.

Here's the links:

Borsalino -- open crown; could be shaped any way you want.

Cavanagh

Will sell for what I bought them for.

They are both awesome hats and like new....especially the Cavanagh.

I'm expecting a nice Knox in the mail soon. If it's too small, I'll be selling that one, too.

Ditto this Mallory.

Lastly, I have this Stetson Open Road. Do a search on these on FL. Everyone re-shapes them into fedoras....very popular hat. It is about 1/2 size too small for me. I could re-shape it for you and send you some photos.

Anyway.......that's what I have available if you're interested.

Just shoot me a PM.

Thanks,

Randy

Randy, I think you got the link for the Open Road wrong. I've been looking for an OR in 7 too so if Sean doesn't want it I might be interested... if the price is right ;)

Sean, welcome!

I second the opinion, from personal experience, that you'd be much better off with a fur felt than wool in this climate. That said, some woolies have their charms too, but judging from your icon, I'd guess you want something better.

I really think vintage could be your best bet. There is a wealth of information in old postings to the lounge that will inform your decisions about different makes, etc.

Try on a lot of hats in stores, good hat stores (kind of hard to find, I know) in exact sizes (not sm, med, lg) to see what fits best and what styles look good on you. Give that matter a lot of thought. Then you'll be better prepared to give eBay a shot. In your size, you'll have a better selection than most of us and more reasonable prices...I've salivated over many that were in your size! If you get a dud, remember that it is easy to resell it and on average, you'll be out your shipping cost. Or maybe not - if you describe it better and illustrate it well with photos - might even end up ahead.

Best of luck!
- Bill

Wooops.....it was about 3am when I posted the link.

I've corrected it in the original post and here it is again: Stetson Open Road

I'll give Sean a few days to respond and then contact you.

Thanks,

Randy

EEEEGAAAAS man! With a size 7, the vintage hat world is your oyster. Forget the wool and consume it with gusto.;)

Man-o-man you ain't kiddin' either. Sean, my friend, I have seen the Self-Same vintage hats I would gladly pay a c-note for in 7 3/8 go wanting for lack of a ten dollar bid in sizes 6 7/8 - 7 1/8. GO FOR IT!

There are loads and loads and loads of hatters who are advertisers on the Lounge and members, as well as mentioned in post. Check out some of them, and you might mention you found them through the Lounge and/or Classic Style. MK deserves the brownie points (for want of a better term) for customers getting directed to them through this website.
