Is this "blast "Ride of the Valkyries" on a loudspeaker while firing rounds at a visitors center" idea influenced by a scene in a movie or every WWII fanatic's dream?

No, HFLG, it's a pipe-dream of someone who OD'ed on Apocalypse Now.

I'm not in that camp, I'm not real comfortable with the Huey airframe--I like bigger, stronger, and higher power/weight ratio myself. (Hence, wanting an S-80 for a "Pave Faux": a Pave Low dead-ringer, but without all the fancy bells and whistles.)

In WWII, we only had the earliest, smallest and most rudimentary of rotorcraft--but they did see limited action in Burma.

We have a Veteran's Museum in Madison Wisconsin... Check out the site!! They have a full sized "Slick" made into a diarrama with pilot and gunner...

Back in 89-92, 60s were still mounted on both sides of both hueys and Blackhawks...

I miss the days when Gray Airfield on Ft. Lewis was just across the parking lot from my barracks... I can still remember waking up to the humm of the rotars warmiing up and the props starting.....Gotta love those chopper jocks!!

I haven't seen the movie but I know the piece is in it.

I didn't say firing rounds at the visitor's center, just buzzing it while blasting the music.

I'm crazy, not... crazy. :D

While we're on the subject of whirlybirds, anyone know if Sikorsky ever made a civilian S-80?

No, the closest that ever came to happening, was canceled.

In WWII, we only had the earliest, smallest and most rudimentary of rotorcraft--but they did see limited action in Burma.

To an extent, but there were a number of designs that were rather advanced for the period, raging from transports, to gunships, but finding money to produce them was another story.

When it comes to aircraft design I think the "good book" says it best...

9...So, there is nothing new under the sun. 10 Is there anything of which one might say, "See this, it is new"? Already it has existed for ages which were before us. Eccl 1:9-10

A little tongue in cheek but as far as basic airframe shapes and designs go we've had the gamut on paper for decades (or further back, thanks Leonardo). Now the innovation comes in materials, control systems and powerplants, which is making some of those early designs finally practical and possible.

Crap. Guess I'll have to hope the Japanese sell theirs cheap at the end of their service-lives, then... Or "rack it up" on NYSE and NASDAQ--even though money bores me to death, enough of it can make a spectacular leverage on corporate decisions.

Speaking of money, hasn't that always been the crippler on technological advancement?

I don't see any reason why this would be any different than any other warbird restoration. I think the Feds require the ship to be registered as 'experimental' and there may be some insurance requirements and passenger restrictions, but - it's a warbird!

I know a girl who was a 'Doughnut-Dolly' during the war and just loves the Huey. I built her a 1/48th scale kit, and she was bowled over! http://www.donutdolly.com/id18.htm
