At the Dog Track... The Whippets

Not sure about this one!! Don’t think i’ve ever said that on the lounge but how they think they can get away by just using the name really diminishes my opinion even farther about Stetson. It’s an ok hat...but it ain’t no Whippet!!! No way!!
There...i feel better.

You’re more generous than I am. I don’t like the hat at all regardless of what it’s called. Calling it a Whippet confuses the issue and dilutes the value of what a Whippet should mean. I don’t see this hat in Stetson’s catalog and I suspect it was made for export sales where the name “Whippet” brings big money.

If it's not in the current catalog it's because it's been discontinued. I'm fairly certain I remember seeing them in one of the spring listings. JJ still has a handful.

When I was at the outlet a few years ago, the Whippet Panamas were far and away the nicest straws they had that day. I've never really been a Whippet fan in general, but I would have bought it had it fit me.

Here is a Whippet I got this last Sunday in trade. It's in good shape but needs to be cleaned. The onion skin is intact and clean. The sweatband is in great shape. No insect tracks or nibbles seen. Not real sure about the decade of mfg since the sweatband has the oak leaf and the liner has stars. Maker tags lead me to think 40s but I guess it could just as easily be 50s. This is the first Foley's hat I've seen.
Crown: 6" open (4 3/4 at front as creased)
Brim: 2 3/4"
Band: 1 3/4"

Good get, Bill. I think any time you see a maple leaf, you're into the 50s.

Wonderful Whippet Bill. I agree with Jim on the 1950s. Wasn't there a thread around here that covered pricing and dating? I seem to remember that you could do some dating by the $10.00 price point.

Here is the earliest Whippet model I have found referance to, 1924. 5 1/2 inch crown, 2 1/2 inch RAW edge brim. From a set of Stetson Fashion Plates. More here: https://www.thefedoralounge.com/thr...-and-ephemera-of-the-golden-era.92141/page-10 top right hand hat.

Matt; Thanks for the Fashion Plate post. A fedora in the name of Whippet in 1924. Wow. This 1924 Whippet hat has different attributes than late years. I will have to try to pull together some advertisements to visually compare dimension changes over the years. Love your plate, catalog and advertisement collection. I am partial to the drawn advertisements.

Thanks again. Eric -

New vintage Whippet. It's probably the 6th pic I've posted with it but I really have a tough time leaving it at home when I head to work. I really like the proportions to everything. Just noticed today the play of light off the image and thought I'd share...

Here is a narrow brim 50s Whippet I acquired recently. I will probably list it in the next day or so. The brim is 2 1/4" and I already have a gray Whippet with a 2 3/4" brim.

Yeah, I think "standard" is 2.5". I'd love to get my paws on one of those wide brim ones.

I suppose. What's the brim width on that one?

Not sure as it's not mine. Popped up about a week ago and disappeared as fast as it came. I saved the pics just to document it. I thought it was 40's due to the stars in both logos and it appears unreeded correct me if I'm wrong.

I'd agree. Plus the name on the sweatband, rather than the liner.
