Have Hornskov changed their lining? I saw that they lack the plastic center protector - this was always a big plus for me - not only utilitarian but also it looked so good and true to a period hat....

Yes Hornskov changed their lining. The plastic is gone. Personally i like this more then before. But this is personal preference..

Following up on my previous questions. My cleaning and stretching of 1950s/60s stratoliner is proceeding with some success. Steamed and brushed and it looks much better. Lexoled the sweat and successfully stretched it one size. Removed the liner and woolite actually worked to get out all the brylcreem stains. However—after a week in a plastic bag with newspaper and coffee grounds it smells much better but still has a pretty obvious must smell. I would love to do a camp fuel bath but live in a NYC apartment building so not an option. Would it help to mist (or just soak) it with rubbing alcohol? Would that kill the must bacteria? Would it harm the color (dark grey) or ruin the leather? Any other advice?

Looking forward to posting pics when this is done.

A trick I learned working as a costumer for a theatre group....the magic ingredient is vodka. Buy the cheapest vodka you can find and spritz the hat....it works getting odours out of wool clothing, is colourless and leaves no odour after a day or so. Works as well as vinegar without the lingering odour of Chips!!!

I purchased a wool mackinaw that stunk to high heaven. Dry cleaning did nothing so I used stronger cleaning vinegar spritz. It worked well but left a strong lingering odour that I associate with Fish & Chips. Every time I wore the jacket I would begin to salivate and would have to snack on something. Had to use the vodka to rid it of the vinegar smell..

I’m not sure what size it is either, but the “XL” gives me hope it’s a 7 5/8, but it could be a 7 3/8 or even a 7 1/8.

I need to double check, but I'm pretty sure I have at least one dress Resistol with that liner. I also associate that reorder tag with pre-1960, and the logo with the funky "O" means at least early 1950s to me.

Ooooh! I don't think I've seen the Resistol variety before. I wonder if they had a name for it?

Upon further review, I have a Beaver Fifteen and my wife has a Resistol "Pace-Setter" with that liner tip. Hers is a bit older with an oilskin protector.

I have never seen one before either. I have a 1960s stingy Resistol with XL on the label that’s a 7 5/8; I hope this is the same.

Has anyone ever figured out what this nomenclature really means? I don't believe it was used on presentation hats. I don't believe it was used on employee service time or retirement hats nor do I believe in this case that Bill Bever was a Stetson employee. The hat is a Sovereign so I'm at a loss. I have seen the same nomenclature on other hats.

I don't know for how many years it occurred nor what year it began or ended but Stetson produced Boss Of The Plains for "officials" of the Death Valley '49ers. The one I purchased a few weeks back has hallmarks of a 60's hat so this hat was made in an era when the BOP was long out of production therefore not offered to the general public (at least in the "classic" style. I've seen catalogs from the 60s where a "BOP" is offered but it's got fenders and a cattleman's crease). I've ordered custom Gibson's from local dealerships before. Maybe via a western shop you could order a custom hat from Stetson?

I would put this Sovereign at ~1970, plus or minus a couple yrs or so either way. At that time Ramco Enterprises had controlled Stetson for a few yrs before selling to Stevens. Exact date is unknown but best guess for the sale to Stevens is 1971. I've often wondered if Stevens Hat Co was responsible for the lazy O.

Maybe via a western shop you could order a custom hat from Stetson?

Maybe this Sovereign was a special order because it's not really a true Western or a dress fedora. It might have been more like a country crossover. That's the only reason I can think of for a special order if in fact that really meant anything. I creased it in its current configuration. In dress weight the Sovereign was on par with the 3X @ $20, both below the Twenty-five.

I've researched William "Bill" Bever (pronounced like Bever-ly). Not a common name, I found an obit that would fit timewise & an estate sale. The seller had told me she bought it at a sale. He might have been a business man but I could find nothing more about him.
